I just love reading about musicians I haven't heard about before. With gorgeous illustrations and a compelling and soulful narrative, this biography of Mahalia Jackson is both entertaining and enriching. It's colorful, expressive, and cuts no corners talking about the moral dilemma that Mahalia faced when trying to make it or break it in her chosen profession. Overall, this was a great biography, perfect for introducing children to different kinds of music they might not have heard before. Great for grades K-2.

Another great addition to the picture book biography shelves. Start a chorus by pairing this with Josephine by Patricia Powell, Skit-Scat Raggedy Cat by Roxane Orgill, When Marian Sang by Pam Munoz Ryan, and Harlem's Little Blackbird by Renee Watson.

Beautiful picture book about the gospel singer from New Orleans, with gorgeous paintings in deep purples and yellows. As a child, her aunt told her someday she would walk with kings and queens; she grew up to sing at the March on Washington next to Martin Luther King Jr, as well as at Carnegie Hall. I liked the little detail that after visiting a nightclub, when her grandfather had a heart attack she prayed that if he recovered she'd never go in a nightclub ever again. And he did, and she didn't!

Jackson ended up becoming famous, but the story makes it sound as though she would've kept singing even if she never made a dime.

Scarlett and I thought this was a beautifully illustrated picture book about Mahalia Jackson's life. I've never seen a children's book about her before, so I think we both would've liked to have learned even more about her. This would be a wonderful edition to any child's ( or adult's) personal library.
