"You're a hero, really not because you're unafraid or unmovable, but because you are afraid and you are moved and yet you constantly strive to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences."

This was an ambitious read that DEFINITELY delivered!!!

I love how deeply character driven it is (and even more than that, the character relationships and the way their lives are entwined and reliant on each other, even if ways they are so unaware of).

The romance elements were very YA- full of angst and accidental betrayal and everything I love when I am in the right mood for it.

The plot itself is already decided by a prophecy so we as the reader, are made to watch the story happen TO the characters rather than watch them create their own and that was fun and stressful in equal measure.

That's pretty much all I have to say- it's not one I felt the need to over-analyse, it's one that (similar to the way the story happens) I kind of just went along with the ride and appreciated where it took me and how enjoyable the journey was. I will stick with the series for sure.

If you love books that heavily centre friendship, have multiple POV's as well as a dual-timeline and leaves a little intrigue, then this is the book for you!

Ambitious but also punishingly didactic, and very clearly written by a teenager. Agree with all the other reviews that say it shouldn't have been marketed as adult; it's clearly YA and fairly clumsy YA at that. I did keep reading, however, and I would be interested to check back in with this author in a decade or so (if she's still publishing) to see if she can shed some of the worst of her teenaged habits. She has potential but I won't continue with this series.

As a YA book, it soared. The driving force of this book is the prophecy stringing the plot together and as a direct consequence of that, the main characters don’t seem to have a lot of agency. However, I wouldn’t say that that limits the story because they discuss their lack of agency and their anger at being used by a prophecy that doesn’t care for them in the same way that the Emperor (the big bad!) uses Asha and other characters. Asha and Obi make excellent lead characters, with the right mix of traditional heroic traits. Asha is insanely clever and is the clear leader, despite Obi being older and more experienced - and I love that. The romance subplot, for me, didn’t hold much value but I can see why it was included - particularly for the target audience of this book. I did enjoy the moments of peace the characters experienced when Xavier’s character was introduced - very reminiscent of ‘The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet’. Mostly I loved the constant social commentary presented through the difficulties and characters our main cast faced. It raised a lot of valuable points that literature should absolutely explore.  While there were some pacing issues, overall the story was enjoyable and I’m definitely going to carry on with the series.

I really liked this book and I wished people would talk about it more. It's mostly characters and relationships driven which I loved.
But I found the plot kind of overwhelming.

It is a story of loss, and adventure, of daring, and of courage burning bright in the bleakest of times. It is a story about love.
And this is how it ends.

a stunning space opera that i just adored to bits, a lot of plot threads were left dangling so i am very very excited to see where this goes next
