It was hard trudging through the first 3/4 of this book. I’m true Maas fashion though, once it kicked off it gave me whiplash. 3 stars because it shouldn’t take so long to get to the point.

I’ve picked this up to read about 4 times since I bought it around 2 years ago, and every time I put it back down again after only a handful of chapters. I found the concept of modern day fantasy SJM style a bit uninteresting having read both of her other series - but this time I decided to power through! It ended up gripping me more at about page 250 and enjoyed the character development, as to begin with I found the main character boring and annoying (I think that was kind of the point?). Good overall, but didn’t love it as much as her other books! However, I will say this series is written much much better than ACOTAR and early TOG now that SJM is quite a seasoned fantasy author, but didn’t like this story as much as those series.
