"That's just what translation is, I think. That's all speaking is. Listening to the other and trying to see past your own biases to glimpse what they're trying to say. Showing yourself to the world, and hoping someone else understands." (pg. 535)

I don't even know where to begin. R. F. Kuang has done it again. She has rattled me, shaken me to my core and I thank her for it. Going into it - having read the entire Poppy War series - I knew I was not bound for a happy, carefree book. Coming from an anthropology background, the extent of human destruction and hatred of "the other" it not news to me but it continues to move me every time.

I can already sense that I will return to this book over and over again in the future and will recommend it to everyone I come across, although not without warning.

The book's alternate title "The Necessity of Violence" captures the journey this book takes one on while reading quite succinctly, althought the extent of this might not seem obvious upon first glance.

In the process I have learned a great deal about linguistics and am planning on dealving into that further. But first I am going to have to digest what I have become witness to by reading this book.

This book was such a wild ride. My husband and I read it together and we both kind of struggled to get into the book at first just because it felt a bit slow and like it was dragging, but it picked up so fast in pace around the halfway point. I truly adored both Robin and Ramy as characters and as friends with each other; they felt very realistic to me and I rooted for both of them so much through the entire story. It destroyed me when
Ramy was killed
and we
then got to watch Robin fall apart over it
.
Letty's betrayal
didn't surprise me too much either since I had spent most of the first half of the book wary of her presence within the group. Overall, I really liked the author's writing style and I really appreciated the slow start in the first half of the book because it gave us time to really come to care about the characters and feel all of their ups and downs.

As someone with a history degree I also really appreciated the hard conversations and topics that the book portrayed. It led to lots of conversations with my husband (and my older mother who also read the book with us!) that I don't get many opportunities to have. I look forward to reading some of Kuang's other works after this for sure!

Absolutely incredible.

It was hard to get into at first, people don't lie when they say it's slow and sometimes reads like a textbook, but after the first quarter it drew me in and I couldn't escape.

The things I originally disliked (character driven, historical context, footnotes) became my favorite parts. I found myself so attached to each of the characters and wrapped into their stories.

As the story progressed you really grew with it, at least I did. Of course, a lot of the lessons I knew, but hearing them from a far more raw perspective was heartbreaking and eye opening at the same time. Looking now at the world we live in today, Babel is less fantasy than we think. The only magical thing about it is that the silver transforms, that is about it. Much of the basis of this book rang true during the time period, and still today.

The world building is amazing. The characters are so lovable (and hate able) and complex all around. They felt raw and real.

I'm so happy I picked up Babel, and it surpassed every expectation. Amazing. Truly, no words exist in the English language to explain my love for this book.

what else do i fucking say, r. f. kuang has brought me to my knees. i have things to pick at but they're not important right now. all that comes to mind is how painfully real it felt to me. i can already see this being a "dark academia" staple in the same way that a secret history or the dead poets society is, which is not necessarily a bad thing and i want to say i ALSO like them but can we be real for a second and forget that? its an evolution past these stories. it's an attempt to infiltrate and blast through the silver laden halls of the ivy league. it's the futility of trying to love a place that does not love you back. it's trying to hold two things in your mind at once, two contradictory things. robin is an excellent protagonist and the undergrads are a wonderful ensemble. it's a bit obvious and a bit overt and a bit heavy handed but, well, as those that have read it to completion know: toppling empire necessitates violence. learn. internalize. listen. understand. this book is just begging you. listen, and then act.
