People I think should read this book:

  • People who write;
  • People who teach writing;
  • People who read written things;
  • People who teach about reading written things.

Salesses gives takes us through the weird (and weirdly brief) history of the fiction workshop as we know it in the US and then shows us the ways that history, and the homogeneity it begets, does a disservice to writers who fall in any way outside the US cultural "norm" of cishet, white, able, Christian male. And that, in turn, fails us *all* as readers. This book has me seriously rethinking how I read, write, revise, and give feedback.
