This book was eh. Of course, a horrifying and captivating story. But the way it was told made it seem more like a work of fiction to me. I don't read many True Crime books so I don't know if this is common of the genre. The writing reminded me a lot of a high school or college paper. A good one, don't get me wrong, but not what I expect of an author.

For such a tragic story, Irene Pence told the story very well. Throughout the book I was flabbergasted by the amount of times John got away with abusing both physically and mentally both of his wives. The fact that even after everything he was still allowed unsupervised visits with his children makes me realize how f'd up our judicial system is. This is something that happens to families all the time and it kills me that there are not better laws out there to protect the victims, and what ends up happening is someone being killed. I would hope that from stories like these, there would be a stronger protection for the victims, but I'm afraid there is still a long ways to go. This is a very tragic story that could have possibly been prevented.
