Finished listening to this today, having physically read it the previous time. Amazing. A hard listen though, trying to keep everything straight without being able to see the text or flip back. Alas, this serious is so complex I needed to listen to this, and the other before it as refreshers. Next up, book 5 re-listen, then I can physically ready book 6!

It’s actually a four star book, but I will not forgive the existence of Karsa Orlong and the fact I had to spend 250 pages with him without any pause. I’d much have preferred Trull’s backstory instead. Karsa Orlong is a dumb barbarian stereotype in the beginning and a dumb barbarian Gary Stu character in the end. Karsa wins or survives his battles based on purely how big and angry he is and it gets so boring so fast.
Felisin’s tenure as Shaik actually ended up being super underwhelming with the majority of the plot being about other schemes within her camp (those were good, but still came up at the cost of Felisin). I enjoyed Cotillion’s more direct involvement in the story though and all the throne and etc stuff involving the Edur was great.
Nevertheless we are four books in and Malazan has much to do if it is going to meet even half of the expectations on its shoulders. The fact those books keep taking me so long is a really bad sign so far.

My Malazan reread continues! The second time I read this book, I liked it a lot more than the first time. This is my review from the first time (below) makes me laugh. I think the key to Malazan, is not to read other books b/w the books in the series, else you'll forget everything. Makes a Martin book look like a shallow character pool...
Meh, although I often wonder why I keep reading these perplexing books, I finally sort of like this one. Which is very sad as each book has approximately 800 pages and this is book 4?! Why do I continue?????
Thank god for wikipedia to help me make sense of it... since I drop this series and pick it up, I tend to forget a lot of the details. And there are many.
