Wow... this book was fantastic! It exceeded my expectations! The action, romance, and twists were enough to make me stay up past my bedtime to finish this!
First off, the characters. I loved Kaleb so much and his vulnerability and selflessness. I admired him throughout this book so much and felt so sorry for everything he had to go through- from his parents, to Em, to Lily. I really liked Lily too! It was so fun to read about her from Kaleb's perspective and see what had drawn him to her. Her fierceness was so lovable and I couldn't but cheer her on. The other characters were alright, not exactly memorable for me. And Emerson and Michael annoyed me, which I don't think the author exactly aimed for.
Second, the plot. It was very nice and all of the twists were unexpected! I loved each turn that was presented and at some points, I was yelling and others, I felt tears coming on. The drama was perfect as well as the action. As you can tell, the writing was fine! No bumps along the road- it was smooth and clean.
The romance was very, very nice. *winks suggestively* I loved how the romance developed slowly and took its time. I could really see the chemistry between them and how much they loved each other. Each little brush of skin brought bumps to my skin. Their banter made me laugh so many times. Lily and Kaleb are one of the ultimate couples ever!
Now... onto things that disappointed me. I felt that so many things were unexplained throughout this book. The whole time travel continuum thing and the rips were so confusing- I could not understand a single thing that occurred. And there wasn't any recapping from the first book! So the confusion distracted me from the rest of the story unfortunately.
And... that cover. My god, it's beautiful and I love the style. You know how most YA books have girls with dresses on covers? Same with this. I felt like the girl on the cover was totally unrelated to the story. The narrator was a boy and the love interest was a Hispanic girl. The girl on the cover is Caucasian and my only guess is that she's Emerson. But... Emerson wasn't the main character in this story. So I'm disappointed that this is one of those typical covers.
Overall, excellent book that will capture your attention from beginning to end!

Timepiece picks up where Hourglass left off, after Kaleb's dad was saved when Emerson and Michael went back in time and changed events the night he died. Rogue time traveler Jack is now on the loose, and his actions are affecting the time stream. Emerson, Michael, Kaleb, and their friends must figure out where Jack is, and find out what secrets are being kept from them that would be useful in fixing time.
It was hard getting into Timepiece - I did not remember the events clearly enough from Hourglass to understand what was going on, and I felt the author could have given a bit more backstory to catch up returning readers, and hook new readers. The teenagers had an unrealistic amount of independence in this book, and although it was October, school (in the form of homework) was only mentioned once. The teenagers did whatever they wanted and made all their own decisions while trying to solve the mystery. That said (because it annoyed me), I did enjoy the book, and the pieces of the mystery that were handed out slowly as the book progressed. I did get a bit confused by the time stream issues - if this happened then, it will change A, B, and C now... but that is a common issue of mine. The last page of the book made me squawk, and I will be waiting for #3!

Although the ending was rather abrupt and I miss having a preview into INFINITYGLASS, this was a good book. I don't understand why Kaleb and Lily don't blow the fuses on appliances as Michael and Emerson do. I liked that Kaleb's family was finally together and some of the revelations in the last few pages beg for further examination. I'm also curious to see who's point of view the third book will be from. I did have a hard time remembering that this story was narrated by Kaleb and not Emerson. I think this could have been avoided by taking more time between the two books. I would recommend this book for older YA readers.
5/12/2012 Holy bejeebus. How can you end it like that?!?!
This book was simply awesome. I'm kind of in love with Kaleb.

The present. Right now. The exact spot where the hourglass filters the sand from the future to the past. That's where we have to live. Before all the sand runs out, or before somebody shakes it all up again.
Whew, man! This book was intense! I totally loved reading in Kaleb's POV. I liked him from Hourglass, so I was looking forward to getting a more in-depth peek into his head.
In the beginning he's kind of an asshat. He's a player and a bit of an alcoholic. But as the book went on there was clear development - mainly due to Lily softening him. I loved this! Kaleb and Emerson had a bit of a thing in Hourglass, but he couldn't have her because of Michael. I thought introducing a love interest between Kaleb and Lily was absolute awesomesauce.
Lily is fabulous, by the way. She's so fiery and blunt! She gave Kaleb a run for his money. I loved the banter between them. It started off as borderline hatred (well, from Lily at least) then moved into something else. That's my favorite kind of romance! It was so realistic and had that wonderful slow burn. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the romance between Em and Michael in Hourglass.
Jack is such a perfect villain. He was creepy and mysterious (even more so than the first book) and had his own disturbing agenda the he followed, no matter what the collateral damage was. He is the epitome of a villain: he's demented and evil to the core with absolutely no redeeming qualities. McEntire did such a great job making him terrifying. I never knew what was in his head or what he was going to do next!
That ending killed me! It was a whammy of a cliffhanger that just filled my head with a million questions. Why? How? WHAT?! Ahhh! I can't wait for a third book!
Favorite quotes:
"What's next? Blood-filled water? A plague of locusts?"
"Apocalyptical references?"
"I think I'll classify you in the boils category."
"Ow."
"Okay," she said, relenting, "Maybe frogs."
"You know what happens when you kiss a frog, don't you?"
"I think they pee."
"Why haven't you talked to her today?" Em demanded. "Why are you ignoring her?"
"I'm not ignoring her. Ow!" She grabbed a few leg hairs and pulled, and I was quickly reminded that tiny and irritable didn't make the best combination. Especially when you poked it with a stick.
Favorite character: Gotta say Lily on this one. She kicked ass!

LOVED THIS SO HARD! Review to come. *clutches chest* *cries*
"I'm a bad ass. A bad ass who bakes when he's depressed." Kaleb Ballard
LOVE THE COVER!!!
Thank you Netgalley and Egmont for Kaleb! It was like Christmas in April!
I've been trying to put into words exactly how I feel about this book and honestly, to say, "I LOVED it" just doesn't seem like enough. This has been one of my MOST ANTICIPATED reads of 2012 and when I found out it would be told from Kaleb's POV? I wasn't sure my heart would be able to take it. That snarky, bad boy from The Hourglass who bakes when he's depressed had me before he finished tying the strings on his apron that says, "Kiss The Cook"! *fans face*
Timepiece picks up where Hourglass left off with the evil Jack Landers on the run and taking people's memories with him when goes. Michael and Em are still lighting stuff up when they touch and Kaleb is back to working his magic with the ladies, leaving his trademark trail of broken hearts behind him.
Things are far from normal though and in the middle of night of fun, a new enemy slips in with a warning. If Jack isn't caught soon, time as they know it could be changed resulting in devastating consequences for the future. The Hourglass recruits will have to pool their unique abilities in order to find Jack and the information he's stolen but will it be enough? Will they be able to catch him before it's too late?
Timepiece had me laughing, crying, gasping, and CLUTCHING MY CHEST!
When the recruits' search comes to a standstill they call for backup. Enter Lilly. (Girlfriend needs her own theme song, like how Darth Vadar has his entrance music.)
It's no secret that Em's BFF, is made of pure awesomesaucilitasauce but she has a power all her own. She is one hot tamale and when she joins forces with the other recruits, it's as if a tiny storm cloud has swept through taking our boy Kaleb's ability to think straight with it. She makes it abundantly clear she is not on Team Kaleb nor will she put up with his bad boy behavior. Lilly also doesn't let him wallow in his empathetic ability and when things get bad and his natural inclination is to run, she makes him face his demons head on. She makes him see that he is good. (We love her for this!) This feisty little Cubano is exactly what our resident badass baker boy needs.
As the search for Jack intensifies, so does the friction between Kaleb and Lilly and pretty soon, Em and Michael aren't the only ones setting off sparks. *fans face* Old threats, new enemies and possible allies emerge but it's hard to tell who can really be trusted. With so many things out of whack, The Hourglass has to look within itself for some answers. Nate and Dune try to school the others on the science of time travel that had me laughing so hard I snorted! Raise ya hand if you wanna enroll at The Hourglass and major in a certain "ology"? *RAISES HAND* *giggles*
This book is so full of awesome and for a sophomore attempt, Myra hits it out of the park! The twists and turns left me on the edge of my seat with my heart in my throat. I thoroughly enjoyed Kaleb's voice and while I always love his snark, there are moments where his tenderness is so touching, it broke my heart and left me a useless puddle of tears and snot. *sniff*
Just when I thought I figured how it would end, Myra threw a curve ball that made me gasp, "Hells Bells!" but was the perfect segue into the next book. GENIUS! It does leave me wondering though, if Hourglass was told from Em's POV, and this was Kaleb's, will the next book will be told from Michael's POV? If so, HOW COOL would THAT be? ;D

I almost quit reading because I couldn't remember enough of the first book to make sense of what was going on. McEntire doesn't give enough of the back story in the beginning, but after a while it doesn't really matter. Timepiece is told from Kaleb's point of view, his father, Liam, is the head of Hourglass. Liam was killed in the first book but Emmerson, and Michael brought him back by traveling back along the timeline. Jack Landers and Cat, both former students at Hourglass, are responsible for the explosion that killed Liam. Teague is head of the Chronos, another group studying time travel. Lily, Em's best friend is more involved in Timepiece, and her dry humor, as well as the banter between her and Kaleb make things a little more interesting. I'll make sure to leave better spoilers below, so we have a better chance of being up to date when the next book comes out :)
****Spoilers****
Jack and Cat killed Liam in an explosion at Hourglass. Michael and Em go back to save him but Michael is killed in the process (I think, this happened in the first book) and Em has to go back to save Michael. All of the time travel, and changes to the timeline are creating rips (old scenes playing out at random times, people with the time travel gene can see the rips. If you touch a person in the rip, it disappears.) Poe who works for Teague shows up in the beginning with a message for Liam, they have until Oct. 31st to find Jack Landers and turn him over. If they do this, the timeline will be fixed, and things back to normal. Enter Lily, Em's best friend who has a knack at finding missing objects. While searching for Jack they find Teague, eavesdrop on her conversation, and discover she has a Skroll, a new technology that holds a ton of info. They steal it from her, and realize it belongs to Jack. Teague, Jack, and Liam all have one purpose, to find the Infinityglass. The Infinityglass' purpose is to channel time travel abilities between others, but it can also be used to steal the abilities of others. Jack steals the memories of Kaleb's mother, and Liam, leaving his mother in a coma. Kaleb and Lily figure out that memories are directly tied to emotions, which is Kaleb's gift. Kaleb is able to steal back the memories, and Lily realizes the Infinityglass is not an object, but a person, who is located in Louisiana. At the end of the book, Kaleb and Lily are together, everyone is back to normal thanks to Poe's help. He dies right after giving the group the message- "I came to warn you. Landers. Chronos. Together...mistake. Huge mistake."
