As for my reread of this book after 9 years, this book hurts so much. There is so much darkness yet people are still able to have hope and kindness. I worry about Helene, Laia and Elias. I don't trust Keenan.

I think the book started strong and I loved how everything felt and was conveyed, but it was more the middle and ending I had some issue/fell off. I think some of the issues I had later in the book were also foreshadowed by issues I had at the start, though at the time they were minor.
To start for what I liked. The beginning from Laia’s POV was very strong and didn’t have an overly long info dump of an introduction which I appreciated. It treated the reader like they were intelligent and let them infer a lot about the world and what’s happening. I also liked that Laia was just a very normal girl, I’ve read a lot of YA fantasy books where the MC is Extremely Special And Different and while not a bad thing it’s nice to see the variety. I thought the setup with the resistance was interesting and liked their internal politics and struggles, it felt very realistic and indicative of what we could expect from Laia’s plot line. I really liked the writing style, especially in describing characters and setting the scene. I also thought the author did a good job in establishing relationships and dynamics between characters. The Commandant was perfectly established as a frightening figure in the book and I liked the way her dynamic with Laia and Elias was so quickly established. Laia’s POV was easily the best written in my opinion, I was always interested in what was happening with her and her development. I think this is where the author’s skill in building tension and unease especially shines. I also found the world building fascinating and was always eager to learn more.
However, there were plenty of things I disliked as well. I personally found Elias’ whole thing rather boring and inconsistent. I especially hated the wag femininity and religion was treated in his chapters, especially regarding his alleged best friend Helene. I noted several times he was upset with her for being feminine/a heterosexual girl in general and at least one instance of him calling her stupid for being dedicated to the religion she had been raised in. I also found issues with showing vs telling with Helene. The book told us over and over again how strong she was and how much better she was than Elias, but was also so frequently damseled across his chapters, it was a bit of a let down. The trials too felt very repetitive with them all being combat, I’ve read other books that took place in trial-based settings and felt that each trial was unique and brought something new to the table in a way I felt this was just lacking. While each trial WAS different, it just got old after a while. There was just also a general feeling of inconsistency and plenty of times I thought that characters weren’t allowed to linger in their emotions for long enough. The romances too I generally found a bit flat and frustrating.
Overall I think it has a lot of potential and is interesting, but found it was dragged down in a few key ways, especially with Elias and his POV (which isn’t ideal for a duel POV book or having 2 MCs.)
Outside of that I thought that audiobook narrators were great and loved their performances.

My reread of An Ember in the Ashes gave me all the feels as much as the first time around. Probably partly because I forgot some of the details…my little brain can only hold so much info! 😁 Still a 5 star read regardless.
The angst, the drama, the adventure and the love triangle were all as good as I remember!
If you still haven’t read this series what are you waiting for?!

This book was so amazing! I was absolutely into this book within the first chapter.
It has action, betrayal, close friendships, love interests, supernatural beings, and some crazy sociopathic characters that you love to hate. All this but it didn't feel like too much the way the author went about weaving everything together it just made sense.
The main characters Elias and Laia are on different sides of The Empire.
Laia comes from The Scholars, who were defeated by The Martials and forced to live under their cruel kingdom. They are treated horribly and many taken as slaves for The Martials where they endure torturous conditions. Laias parents have been killed and she and her brother Darin are sent to live with their grandparents.
One night Darin is taken in for interrogations after a Martial raided her home, under the charge of helping The Resistance. The Resistance are renegade Scholar fighters who are trying to take down The Empire. Laia is on the run with no home or family, with only hopes to find The Resistance and to help free her brother before he is killed.
Elias is a Mask in training , one of the deadliest Martial fighters trained for years in the art of war. He comes from a noble line of Martials, he is the fiercest warrior in his class and is also the bastard son of The Commandant, a high ranking official under The Empire. Being the son of The Commandant does not help him succeed because she would like nothing more than her mistake of a son to be dead, how's that for motherly love?
Elias and Laia are sworn enemies by nature by their lives become intertwined as Laia takes on a Resistance assignment to be The Commandants slave girl for information and Elias is trying to find a way to free himself from the hell of becoming a full fledged Mask where he will have to deal with being a cruel & torturing soldier under his bloodthirsty mother and The Martials.
Their destinies seem to be the key to big changes within The Empire the minute they meet and a series of events take place.
After reading this book I can't wait to start the Second in the series, I just wish the third book was scheduled to come out sooner. I love how the author wrapped up a lot of my questions, but not everything which is good because it leaves a good amount of anticipation. Seriously can't wait to read A Totrch Against the Night!! :)

I read this book for the first time years ago and I remember absolutely devouring it and the sequel in quick succession. I remember vividly loving it but I found it a bit of a slog this time. I think thats a me thing and not the book though. Its still as dark and gritty as I remember, and unique in its own way. Fast paced, good plot and interesting characters, I think just some of it fell short for me this time. I’d still recommend it though.
