I find I've grown out of YA in the past couple of years, but I still give it a shot on occasion, and this was a pleasant surprise!

Interesting worldbuilding, well-developed cast of characters, and a high-stakes plot with a cliffhanger I'm not mad at whatsoever. I've heard good things about Sabaa Tahir and I'm happy to say the hype is deserved.

I bought this when the ebook was on sale, but I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to have to buy a print edition too! Looking forward to seeing what happens next for Laia and Elias.

"Fear is only your enemy if you allow it to be."

ME after finished this book: I NEED TO GET A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT RIGHT NOW!

Pros:
♡ I love these characters so much especially Helene and Keenan (yeah I know this maybe an unpopular opinion) but nonetheless I also enjoy Laia and Elias as the main character.
♡ The relationship among characters.
♡ The setting and plot is just excellent.
♡ This is just my preference, but I mostly enjoy two perspectives kind of writing so this works for me.
(Idk why this book gives me a little bit of harry potter vibes.)

Cons:
✑ Lack of magic system, mythology and world building.
✑ Love interest, I don't know.. it's not love triangle but it *seems* to be like that (this is so hard to explain)

Overall, I think this is worth the hype! and I ended up shipping Elias and Helene.

❥ Favourite quote (which mentions to MY QUEEN/HEROINE HELENE)
"She can kill a man with a twist of her hand, she’s a demon with a sword, and she can drink most of us under the table. And because of all that, maybe we’ve forgotten that she’s a girl."

I enjoyed this very much and if it weren’t for one author trick that is used not one but twice at the end of the book, I would have rated it a half star higher. I’m hoping the next book won’t pull that again because I will definitely be continuing the series.
