“Anastasia” meets “Treasure Planet” in this action-packed YA sci-fi by Ashley Poston!

This is my second time reading “Heart of Iron” (my first time on audiobook) and I was just as engaged and excited as I was in 2021 when I read it the first time. Poston blended elects from two animated classics into a new story that will interest any science fiction fan.

All of the characters are are so vibrant and fun, with layers of backstory that slowly reveals over the course of the story. They fit perfectly in the beautiful world Poston created as well, which has nods to the world building in the “Star Wars” franchise.

I loved this book. I wouldn’t say it’s too heavy on the sci-fi as it is very focused on romance and entwined fates. It’s fairly dark if you’re comparing it to a Disney movie, but the characters are interesting. It feels like a YA romance novel, but it makes for a good read if that’s what you’re looking for. There are plot twists, but they’re fairly predictable if you’re paying attention.

this was really captivating, and struck an interesting balance of being predictable enough that i didn't feel lost throughout the whole thing, but also twisty and original enough that i was eager to continue listening to find out what happened next.

reading the summary i was a little apprehensive about what the romance would be, but found myself pleasantly surprised as i listened and it became clear who was important to whom. also found family and queer mc's def gave me heart eyes.

i have to admit that i was a little confused at the worldbuilding -- terms like ironblood and metal were thrown around a LOT and while i could glean/infer their meaning, i wish there had been a more concrete definition.

the end was absolutely heartbreaking but also makes me super eager to get into the next book.
