I loved this to start off with, when it was about spaceships and a close-knit crew that was like family. And then it faltered a bit for me when it started being more about royal intrigue. The beginning was really strong and was definitely 5 stars for me, but the last half was more like 3. It wasn't bad, it just didn't really excite me as much. I think there were lots of interesting things about this book, and I will continue to the next book for sure.

Where do I begin with this book? It was a rollercoaster to be honest, the kind that makes you excited and scared at the end. I loved the relationships in this book. To be completely honest there needs to be more books that have space pirates in it. I mean, really. Then out of no where they pull the Anastasia plot on the readers and i have to say, loved it. The violence in this book was a little too much, i skimmed the final fight scene. Only time is to tell if i will read the second one.

It was a decent book. The main character and plot is common and predictable. The best part of the book was a relationship between two of the side characters. I will continue with the series just to see their relationship unfold.

I liked the book fine enough but there are so many typographical errors. It reads like it was copy-edited in a hurry. After I encountered the second error within the span of a few pages near the beginning of the book, I almost stopped reading, as my patience for poorly edited published material is thin.

Here are several: "kep" instead of "keep" (5), "guarden" instead of "garden" (18), "Jay" instead of "Jax," "her" instead of "his" (170), "tok" instead of "took" (196), and "head" instead of what I'm guessing is supposed to be "eyes" (429), in addition to stray quotation marks and missing commas. The simile of the palace to "a shard of black glass" is used twice within a few paragraphs of each other, as if it is a new revelation each time.

For the next edition or printing of the book I hope these get fixed.

Review to come!

*edited*

Still writing the review but AN ANASTASIA RETELLING SET IN SPACE!!!! AND SOME PARTS SO ENTIRELY UNEXPECTED!

*EDITED*

I’ve had this book since it came out, but I hit a reading slump a few months ago, and then there was just a lot of emotional upheaval going on so I never got down to reading it until now.

Some books aren’t worth the wait, but in my humble opinion? This one was.

I haven’t heard a lot about it from people I follow, but I enjoyed it tremendously. It was a story I liked (Anastasia), set in a genre I like (sci-fi/fantasy) with characters I very quickly got attached to. They were flawed and raw and, yes, sometimes predictable, but they were engaging. They were charming and endearing and I was very invested in their stories by the time I was 100 pages in.

Admittedly, there were some things I predicted happening before I got to the so-called plot twists. Some elements that were very obviously laid out as clues that allowed me to figure out certain aspects that might have been twists otherwise. But that could also be attributed to how long I have been reading YA, and the fact that I know what to look for.

I was so relieved when I realised this story had NO LOVE TRIANGLES. Still internally cheering about it. The couples in the story are both different and while one seems to develop pretty fast, in the situation, I could easily suspend my disbelief and enjoy the chemistry between the characters.

Now I have to wait for the next book to know how this ends, and I’m impatient.
