Olivia Atwater creates great adult-oriented fairy tales. This one is definitely more gothic, but I enjoyed it a lot. Once I got into it, it was hard to put down because I wanted to know what was happening. I really liked Winnie, and her awesome familiar, Oliver. I also really ended up liking Mr. Quincy, but I felt their romance could have been a bit more developed. It was good, but it was not the best part of the story.
The one thing I'll say is that I really felt like I was missing a lot of plot points when I was reading, like there were a whole bunch of other books that led up to it that I hadn't read. I was able to piece it all together, but it did leave me with the feeling that I had just missed a whole bunch of books that explained a lot of side characters and Winnie's background. Now, I did read "Half a Soul" by Atwater (LOVED that book), but not the other two in the Regency Faerie Tale series, and there are some definite ties to Half a Soul... so it's just possible that the other two books did contain a bunch of information that should have known.
I'll also note that this being set in the Victorian era didn't seem to have much relevance to the rest of the book. It could have been any historical era.
Great book, but I still loved Half a Soul more. :)

Cute love story. Tired of reading "insta-lust," so this was a breath of fresh air. Hoping the next book comes out soon so I can find out what happens next! (No cliffhangers, per se, but I want to know more things that happen in this faerie world).

I really enjoyed continuing to explore Olivia Atwater's faerie world in this darker instillation. While it was much more grim and heavier than the regency books, she kept that gleam of hope throughout and it never felt unbearable. I really appreciate that balance.

I will never forgive Olivia Atwater for making me get butterflies over a man with a literal rat tail!!!!
Ew!!!
But anyway I love Olivia Atwater’s writing. It’s always so inviting and captivating. However, there is always a moment in the final act where there is some sort of revelation that the characters have and I’m always a bit puzzled on whether I’m following that revelation with them. Was I not reading carefully enough? Am I forgetting things from earlier? Am I just too stupid? I always feel uncertain with my understanding towards the end of things.
Love it nonetheless!

A fair bit darker than her other series set in the same world.
I'm not totally sure how i feel about it. I think i liked it, but perhaps was just in the mood for something lighter.
A note on trigger warnings nothing is graphic in description or talk all is implied or closed door, but know that sexual assault and pedophile are major plot points.
