I don't know why, but Atwater's faerie tales are just like candy.

Absurdist? Yes. Revisionist? Yes. A little silly? Sure. And I continue to devour them.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)

3.75 stars. Kind of slow in the beginning but it picked up in the second half. The romance was a slooow burn but I liked the cast of characters. Curious to see where the next one will go.

There are faces in the walls, dark fae lurking in the halls, and a magic touched governess wandering through the Witchwood. Be prepared for what else may be hidden in the knot.

A Victorian gothic worthy of the name. The Brontë sisters would approve. The characters are dark, deep, and alluring. The story is layered, and the setting is rich with creepy details that you can’t pull your eyes from. My love for Olivia Atwater is set in stone, or rather wood. I will read anything she writes.

as a person who isn’t a big fan of romantasy because oftentimes they mainly focus on the romance which is mostly 2 hot characters finding each other hot with no chemistry beyond that and the plot just being there in the background i wish every book in this genre was like this one
first of all the plot was plotting, i found myself very immersed in the story AAND the romance was romancing as well , i was literally kinking my feet when they were just touching hands, this romance might not be for everyone since it’s on the slower side but i really liked how we actually got to know the characters first and see how good they would fit together eventually
another thing that i liked about this book were the characters, even the secondary ones and especially the mc , Winnie, she’s such a smart and funny protagonist you can’t help but love her
lastly the atmosphere in this book was just amazing, at times i felt like i was in that creepy mansion with all of the characters
my main pet peeve with this book was how many times Quincy’s crimson eyes were mentioned, like i remembered it from the first page there’s no need to bring it up 20+ more times😅
looking forward to the next books in this series!
