I liked this book, probably better than the first one. It held my attention very well and had lots of intrigue and plot twists to river readers. There is an element of romance between Todd and Viola, which normally annoys me, but in this book it was well done. The way they used each other as support rather than constant affection was good. This book will make you question what it means to be "right" and what must be given up to lead.

Wow! Whilst I enjoyed the first there were elements that detracted, but this was just brilliant. The pacing was fantastically frantic in places and I found myself holding my breath as I was so caught up in the action.

The character development was so incredibly well done. I felt that all of the trials of the first book and then the desperate situation our characters found themselves in and the moral conundrums they were pitted against meant that their acceleration into adulthood felt palpable and convincing. And meant that Todd moved past some of the more teenage quirks I found a little annoying from him in the first book.

The themes of the book were really dealing with very big social and moral issues. Coercion, manipulation, war, political spin and propaganda, treatment of non-humans, troubling colonial imperatives. They could have been too much for a novel, but just explored with such a deft authors touch to really get the reader thinking and interrogating the characters, the situation and themselves.

Shazam-non stop action. I really could not put it down. Todd and Viola, so many things go wrong. They are the bravest characters, so young and unseasoned they keep trying falling and getting back up. This place is not what they had dreamed of. It is full of cowards, back stabbers, and liars. Who do they trust, which side is t he right one ? Many choices are made many are wrong, but they never fail each other. Ends with a cliffhanger.

Seriously. Awesome. Being a series, you kind of think you know what's going on and you know the characters and can predict what their choices will be and how they will respond to whatever is thrown at them. You think you know how they are going to move the plot along. But in this book, you don't know. It's so different from the first one with new struggles and confusion that the characters take you by surprise. They are constantly faced with decisions that will completely change their life and well being and that of others they both love and hate no matter what direction they choose. Todd becomes a new person--a man--who is trying to forget who he was while at the same time desperately trying to hold on. Separated, you can see how much Todd and Viola need each other, but you see how strong they can be on their own, in the face of their enemies. There is tremendous growth with their relationship as they discover just how much one means to the other. Agh! Loooooove it!!!

The second book was more about human issues. What is evil? Who is worse? I really liked that Davy became someone you liked- even more than Todd. Mostly the noise was less of a focus and the Moral problems the greater focus. I sometimes got annoyed that there was such focus on moral and human problems, although I think it was nice that neither of Viola’s side(Coyle) or Todd’s (Prentiss) was a perfect choice. It felt really real. I still really love the series!

Earlier review: Read these when I was 15 and they are so great, so cruel, so original. The characters are great and the world is magnificent, one of my favorite book series. Everyone should read them! I'm looking forward to rereading them soon!
