I was disappointed by this book. I love time travel and I love lesbians so I thought i would really like it. But I just couldn’t get invested in the characters. I didn’t find them that interesting, I thought they were pretty much the same character twice, just on different sides of the war. I enjoyed the letters they wrote to each other, but found the segments between the letters to be a chore.

I started reading this and thought, on page one, “This is not for me.” Normally, I would have then put the book down and never spoken of it. But this was a book club book, and I had volunteered to lead the discussion, so I read half of it. And then I thought I could and should finish it. And you know what? It was not for me.
Too vague, too flowery, too abstract, too melodramatic.

I really wanted to like this. I remember a few years ago when it blew up on tumblr and now that's I've read it I understand why that happened but it just didn't really work for me. It sounded like something I'd really like but I think I found it hard to connect to and understand the characters because there was so little context about the world. I know that was the point but I just needed a bit more. There are some lovely phrases and sentiments in the letters but I just found my attention drifting while reading it because I didn't really care because I didn't feel connected to it.
