Fourth in the series about Giordano Bruno of Nola, imagining him as a spy and detective for Sir Francis Walsingham, while a longer term sub-plot to locate a treasured ancient book that will help Bruno with his work on the nature of the universe continues.

In Plymouth with Francis Drake's fleet as they prepare to set sail to capture Spanish gold, Bruno is involved in a case to solve an apparent suicide that doesn't look so straightforward. Some old adversaries reappear and there is plenty of Elizabethan society and social issues to see.

The detective work felt a bit strung out, with lots of mistakes being made by Bruno and the others working on the case, almost boiling down to:
"Aha - it was him! Here's evidence"
"Oh, it turned out not to be him. Well, maybe she did it! Here's our evidence!"
"Oh wait, no couldn't be."
"What about him instead? Yes!"

Wederom een sterk boek in de serie. Plymouth is een erg mooie setting, waarbij Parris slim gebruikmaakt van de combinatie van schepen in de haven en het dorp zelf als plek van handeling. Schrijfstijl is wederom heel soepel.

Best book in the series. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars.

Gradually working my way through this series. The main character is a bit of a rubbish detective but once you start the series, you feel you need to plough through them all.

Entertaining as usual.

And so to book four in this series. As always i love to settle down with Bruno and solve another murder! S J Parris has weaved her magic again, i couldn’t put it down, i loved the setting on a ship this time with the renowned sir Francis. Drake with Sidney of course helping although we didn’t see him as much this time and when we did he was petulant than normal. There has been a suicide on one of Drakes ships or so it seems, Dom Antonio from Portugal is due to arrive in Plymouth any day and Bruno and Sidney at the behest of the queen are to accompany him back to London. Sidney has other ideas he wants to sail to the new world with Drake even though the queen has forbids it. Sidney thinks if they can help solve the suicide which Drake potentially thinks is murder then it might secure their passage onboard, even though Bruno doesn’t want to go he will do anything to help his friend. As always there is intrigue, adventure, fights and near death experiences for Bruno and I particularly liked his friendship with Sam who he rescues from drowning at the beginning, i was just sad that we didn’t get to see him at the end of the book as i would have like Bruno to help him in some way. That being said this was a page turner as usual and i throughly enjoyed it. If you still haven’t found this series you must do so immediately, the writing is brilliant the historical descriptions superb and it feels like you are seeing an old friend again as you open the pages. Can’t wait to read the one.

(Reread)
This is my favorite book in the Bruno series although it wasn't as quite as good as I remembered, which is a shame. The romance annoyed me more this time. It felt a little forced and It could have worked fine without it.
But I still loved the setting, the characters, the sass from Bruno and the amount of Sidney we get in this one! There was some sharp wit and really good writing and I always turn to Bruno for a comfort read which this gave me.
