I love all the Bad Machinery mysteries, but I think this one is my favorite because of Mr. Troll and his pet fox. They are the cutest!

So stinking cute, I loved it.

John Allison is very quickly becoming my favorite graphic novel author.

Another lovely instalment. Not quite as laugh out loud funny in the first half, but still great fun.

I didn't pay close enough attention and ended up getting #3 instead of #1. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on. However, I really really enjoyed this and will go back and read the others.

Someone is setting empty barns on fire in the fields around Tackleford, and Linton and Sunny think this could be their next case. It's not nearly as fun to solve mysteries without Jack though, who has hardly been seen all summer now that he's dating Shauna. Charlotte and Mildred as similarly left to their own devices and in Shauna's absence they decide to domesticate the weird troll they found living under a bridge. He seems like a perfect man to set up with their new French teacher... if he's not the one setting all the fires, that is. Another pitch-perfect John Allison caper.

The troll in this volume is not nearly as cute as the previous Tackleford mysteries, the wendigo Archibald and the cheroonear. This mystery, however, nicely explores the trials and tribulations of young love -- most especially the difficulty in spending enough time both with one's friends and one's new love interest.

Also, John Allison writes the wittiest, snappiest dialogue. I can't stop talking like his characters for a few hours after I read his stuff (and simultaneously wishing that everyone in the world was a clever, saucy, slightly defiant Brit).

I love John Allison and I adored this story. Maybe one of the weaker resolutions to the mysteries that this gang solves, but pure joy as usual seeing Charlotte and Shauna and Mildred pour into another story as fresh, fully-formed characters. He really knows how to write people.
