A much needed read, especially as of late.

This was an interesting read. This was written after brixit so there are questions of immigrations and I think that mirrors some of what the US is experience now.

Chosen by a fellow book club member, not myself.

Some great talking points. At times feels like a University essay. The personal bits sometimes felt a little manufactured/forced in my opinion.

She often writes well but as a whole book I didn't really rush to pick it up.

"The food writer Bee Wilson describes the phenomenon [of clean eating] as 'an attempt to offer a new way of eating that comes without any fear or guilt,' and concludes that the movement represents a dysfunctional dream of purity in a complex, toxic world."

"Both words [hospitality and hostility], I discovered, are birthed from 'gosti,' their ancient Indo-European root. Gosti meant host, guest, and stranger, the trio of roles through which, I believe, we consciously or unconsciously shift all our lives."

DID NOT FINISH

Literally two sentences which essentially blamed fat people for world hunger. Couldn't get over it, ruined the book for me. This was extremely painful because I was otherwise loving this book
