I read this as an ebook from my library and it was captivating. Lost steam in the last 10%. Maybe too rushed or maybe just too underwhelming of a conclusion for a memoir that presented such big thoughts and questions for the other 90%. 4.75/5 ⭐️

I listened to the audiobook version and found myself resonating with this memoir, which blended Hua’s account of the Asian-American experience, the feeling of aimlessness as a young adult, and the grief that comes with loss of a loved one.

This book had some nice parts, but I found the narration somewhat insufferable. Hsu himself admits at the end that he’s “legendarily self-involved,” which I had felt for most of the book. I think the memoir would be much stronger if it was more self-critical and introspective throughout the book, rather than mostly at the end.

I think I saw this on BookTok and decided to download a copy 😳
It’s a short read, but it does not shy away from the hard things. The content warnings will be below!

I adored Hua and Ken’s relationship. There are true soulmates (in a friendly way as well as in a romantic way) that truly see you for you and I could see this so clearly for these two 🥹 I have a lot of time for both ❤️
I think I knew Ken’s death was going to be inevitable, but I also was not ready for it 🫠

Not my most groundbreaking read of the year, but still gripping. 3.5 stars out of 5 stars for me, thank you ✨
