6. Personal Response: Visiting the different worlds and seeing the varying cultures of each is exciting. It’s a whole new world of peoples to learn about. [return]7. Connections: This is a bit of a Lord of the Rings quest book, but for younger readers. It would be great in a quests display.

Read this book as a child and I was hooked. Read all the books in the series and I still love them just as much. Wish I could go back in time and read this book again for the first time.

Sci-Fi. Fantasy (a bit). Survival. Post-Apocalypse. Surreal. Future Earth (Orbona). Alien encounters.

Overall, this book reminds me of

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Summary:

Eva Nine was raised by Muthr (Multi Utility Task Help Robot) and she was the only human in her home, Sanctuary. The book is about a girl looking for other humans and much, much more.

My Thoughts

It's a good read but it's not the kind that would take your heart from the first page. It's the kind of book that you would greatly enjoy if you put everything on HIATUS. As in, continually read it, no page-stopping or any of that.

SpoilerAlso, Muthr died. I almost cried at the moment because I thought of what it would be like to lose a mother and a guide. Things are going to get harder without Muthr around.

In the end, Eva did find a human, a boy, in fact. And I am also sensing that Eva had a tiny, tiny crush on Hailey, the human boy.

After Muthr had gone, Rovender took over the task to take care of her.

The ending was very strange and raised more questions for me. But overall I really enjoyed the book.

Like a good children's book, this book blossoms upon rereading it as an adult. This book captivated me when I was Eva Nine's age, and Tony DiTerlizzi's unique imagination draws you into that same sense of wonder regardless of your age. At the beginning, I wished more of the creatures were illustrated, but I'm glad that some of them were left for us to imagine ourselves. This book captures so well the feeling of growing up, of dwelling into a world more dangerous but also more wondrous than you could have imagined. Although the book isn't too long, and a lot of the word count is dedicated to world-building, it does a remarkable job with the characters. I was really moved by Muthr's arc this time around. Very excited to reread book 2 -- and I actually have never read book 3! It wasn't out yet when I was reading the series, so it'll be a new adventure :)

this was definitely one of my favorites as a kid. I always would find myself thinking back to the story and the amazing illustrations as well. I only had the first for the longest time and recently received the box set as a gift. I can't wait to see how the story develops!

From this I have concluded I am not a Sci/Fi fan. There were too many things that weren't real for me in the book. I had a hard time feeling connected because of that.
