ouch. this one hurts.
really a masterclass in how to make an emotionally poignant comic without coming across as saccharine or over dramatic.
not fully what i expected, for better and worse, and i’m still not 100% into bechdels drawing style though it’s grown on me.

I’m finding more and more that graphic novel memoirs of any kind are fantastic and near always a five star read for me. But I’d really recommend this one! It’s so reflective and literary and freakin epic! Seriously! Give it a shot!

Read this to fulfill a reading challenge prompt and I enjoyed it! The art style was stunning and it was fun to see the similarities and differences between the book and the musical. I think a lot of the literary references throughout went over my head a bit, or I just didn’t filly grasp the depth of their meaning. Overall, it was a very intricately woven, well-structured examination of Bechdel’s life, family, and her father’s role in both.

Let’s just say I’m now a huge Bechdel fan. This book had me invested starting at ~30 pages in and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it. The last page really moved me.

I didn’t love the use of classic literature in this. I get that it was meant to tie into her love for her English teacher father but it came off as pretentious more than anything.

The comic panels were of course stunning and thought provoking.
