One of the most devastating pieces of literature. Truly incredible plot with unforgivable characters. Fuck Griffith. If you’ve never watched the original show or read the mangas’s these are the books the whole series leads up to in my opinion. The artwork is perfection and make you truly feel despair.
Dark fantasy at its finest. One of my all time favourites.
Is there a lot of gratuitous female nudity? Yes. Is there unnecessary violence, rape and debauchery. 100%. Would it pass the Bechdel Test? Absolutely not. Would Lena Dunham save me from a burning building if she knew I adored Berserk? She wouldn't even try. But dammit it's fucking amazing and I'm overlooking all of it.
The Guts-Griffith-Caska relationship is one of the most interesting, complex dynamics I've experienced in a manga, let alone fantasy. I find it amazing that after literally 4 deluxe and 12 regular volumes in, that we are still scratching the surface of what was uncovered in the first few volumes.
Monster design, fighting and art are grade fucking A. I still marvel at how Miura was able to balance dialogue, conversation, plot and detailed action scenes so well. Everyone should read it provided you're good with probably every content warning in existence.

Honestly amazing portrayal of Griffith. I loved how you can see his feelings purely from his eyes and even went into some inner dialogue.
To add, the atmosphere of dread and helplessness was conveyed beautifully.

This is where the shit hit the fan. If the last two books were the Golden Age, now it's the fall - and we find out what the hell happened to Guts and the world in general, so he would become the character we saw on the very first arc.
It's not a perfect volume - while I like how some of the Casca/Guts development went, there were some parts I felt were kinda uneeded - in special the little jealousy moments.
Anyway, it's still a very strong book, where the small weaker parts don't really affect the overall quality of the story.
