The art is beautiful, especially the backgrounds and Spanish town-scapes. The constant nudity of the main character is… questionable, though. Not sure why that’s needed other than because the artist wanted to draw it.

There’s some strong emotional beats, but I think the point that March is trying to make about mental health and redemption gets a bit lost, because his writing can be clumsy at times. In comparison with something like, for example, *The Many Deaths of Laila Starr* (which has some overlapping themes and elements) this doesn’t hold up so great.

this book is gorgeous. absolutely showstoppingly beautiful. every page! which makes it very frustrating how badly paced and derivative the story is. i understand it's probably easier to sell a comic book than an art book of sexy skeleton ladies and Spanish coastal landscapes, but I honestly would have preferred the art book here!

my favorite kind of book.

An incredibly well-done tale about the pain we live with, about regret, about an inability to see past ourselves, about loss, about love, and about a steadfast refusal to give up on people even when the rest of the whole universe demands otherwise. A story of a young woman who has recently committed suicide and journeys through the not-quite-afterlife, this immediately deals with heavy subject matter, so be warned. Overall, the artwork is amazing - the protagonists' visual treatment throughout is an interesting way to comment on vulnerability and transparency - and the story really delivers. One of the year's best, easily.

did not like this at all?
idk I felt as if the book didn't really take the suicide seriously or offered another perspective on it, I hated the "love interest", it felt as if her own worth was connected to the perception of other people, especially her boyfriend AND why the fuck was she naked the whole time??

This is how you write a graphic novel folks!! You know this is going to be good just looking at the cover art. Karmen is a dark tale, more about life than death, that tugs at the heartstrings. It is also clever, fantastical, beautiful and hilarious. One of my favourites of 2022 so far!
