The fifth and final instalment of Chestnut Springs gives us Beau: the super soldier, broody, and hot as hell middle Eaton brother.

Back from Afghanistan after a harrowing experience when he missed his ride out, he has a whole lot of trauma to unpack. His physical injuries have healed, but getting out of his head is another thing.

He feels like he lacks purpose, but then Bailey gives him one. The town has treated her like trash since forever and he's convinced that giving her his last name will turn things around for her.

He's 35 to Bailey's 22 and even though she knows better, she takes his bet.

What she doesn’t know is how long he’s been secretly pining for her, and the lengths he will go to ensure her happiness and safety. Yet.

→ Oh. My. God. I’ve had this on my shelf for a few months and have been procrastinating because I really didn’t want to come to the end of Chestnut Springs. Hopeless was worth the wait.

Elsie Silver has masterfully built a world and draws emotion from readers with such acuity that she cements herself as an auto-buy, favourite author for me 💯

📌 What stood out
» Beau has the protective/ possessive vibe on lock. Anyone who dares to look at Bailey the wrong way will immediately regret their decision.

» Bailey has been a social pariah her whole life, but the Eaton wives have her back and show her the love she deserves.

» We get a little bit of each of the other couples which felt like a hug and a comforting way to tie everything up.

📌 Moments
» Bailey’s spine comes out and she gives a verbal lashing to some folks who deserve it 👏

» Beau puts a ring on her finger at the bar in front of her favourite patron and IT IS EVERYTHING!! 💍❤️🥹

» I’ve never been a bath gal, but I’ve never wanted a soaker tub more in my life. 🛀

I liked this book a lot but it wasn't my favorite out the the Chesnut Spring's series. It was very different from the other books too. I was hooked with Beau from the beginning of the series, I knew he would make a great male main character and I wasn't wrong. Beau is a great character and his story is so unique compared to the others of the series that I was surprised by it. I loved that Beau was so confident in his feelings for Bailey and he showed it so well that it just made everything better. Bailey was such a great character! I loved how she was willing to discover new things about herself throughout the book and seeing her development was wonderful. Their relationship was great, their banter was just divine and the fact that they were each other's rock and make each other laugh was beautiful. I think that their banter was the best part of the book. The only reason why this is not a 4.0 or 4.25 star book is because I think the Bailey's story and past could have been explored a little bit more, to maybe add a little conflict throughout the story. It was a wonderful book and a great way to finish such an amazing series and I would definitely re-read it.

Memorable Quotes
"I relax when I'm looking at her"
"You don't tell a person you love them with the expectations they'll say it back. You tell them because you want to. You tell them because it's true.
"It bothers me that what we're doing here can be filled away as fake when it's the most real thing I've felt in my life."
"This girl has brought me back to life without even trying"
"He's beautiful almost always. But he's blinding when he smiles."
"You asked me who I wanted to be once, and it's this. Me. Right here. Right now. With you."

This was my most anticipated book in the Chestnut Springs series, and unfortunately, it did not live up to my hopes. Thankfully, about halfway through, things got better, and I started to really enjoy the plot. Sadly, for the first half of the book, Beau feels so immature. And the constant mentioning of Bailey’s age bothered me. I also understand that Beau wanted to separate from his family after the accident, but not having as many of the extended family scenes as the previous books had me a bit sad. Beau thankfully developed as a character and became more like I imagined he would be based on the other books in the series. I liked Bailey’s honesty and sex positivity, but at times in the beginning, it felt like they only had lust, not love (or the beginnings of) for each other.

This one didn’t hit quite as much as the absolute banger that Reckless was, but I’m glad that the series ended with Beau getting his HEA.

Beau and Bailey were perfection. Having the duality of their hilarious banter mixed with their vulnerable moments had me feeling all types of emotions. Their dynamic is so precious, how Beau defends and stick ups for Bailey across all avenues and how Bailey helps Beau process these repressed feelings of being back in civilian life after everything that occurred in his last deployment. Their balance and support for one another, while their internal/external struggles might be different, had my heart exploding.

I love the whole Chestnut Springs series and this was a great ending, breaking the mould a little of them all settling near the ranch which was nice. I loved the fire between Beau & Bailey and they were funny and real as characters. Overall they weren’t my favourite couple but I enjoyed reading about them and both of them getting a bit of a redemption arc / fresh start.

Beau IS everything. And Bailey IS everything. And they are perfect together, truly. This story was beautiful for so many reasons and getting to crux of Beau’s story after so many things and teasers for four books was much needed. And seeing Bailey finally become someone was a final reminder of (in my opinion) the key features of small town romance. People finding themselves and discovering who they are and where they belong, (even if that isn’t in the small town 🙄). Everything happened very fast but that was sort of the point, especially for Beau. Just being impulsive and following his gut when it came to his emotions and his feelings.

The minor third act breakup was dealt with in the way I always feel these things should be. They took time and then came back together. They treated his mistake and his misjudgment as just that BECAUSE THEY ARE IN LOVE AND PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES.

Overall, this was the perfect story for Beau and Bailey. But as a finale for the series? I didn’t like it. There was so little interaction with the rest of the family. I know that fit with the situation for each of the characters but it’s just seems a shame for the last book in the series. A shame for the found family not to be a key factor of the book. Especially the ending.

But, on the contrary, I think it was the only way it worked. It would’ve been unfair and a complete falsification to create a situation in which Bailey, and even Beau, stayed in Chestnut Springs. So they had to leave. It was part of their stories. It’s just sad.

And everything happens for a reason. If Beau had never left the military, as he said himself, he would never have settled down or allowed himself to fall for someone. So in order for that to happen, he had to leave the military, and maybe if what happened to him hadn’t happened he would never have left. And then he would never have been inclined to be impulsive and help Bailey out and she may never have had the push she needed to leave Chestnut Springs and he may have been stuck putting on a happy face in a job and a place he felt uncomfortable in for the foreseeable future.

It makes sense he was the last hero because he’s the one who’s been THE tease from book one. But it’s a shame that the ending of a small town romance series doesn’t end in said small town. And even though the city is only an hour away, and they will all visit regularly, it just breaks the found family up a bit. They’re all together in the end, at a family dinner, but not in Chestnut Springs.

I haven’t read the Gold Rush Ranch series so I don’t know about Violet and the fact that she’s an Eaton who doesn’t live in Chestnut Springs with her family so I guess I’m just a little bummed. It couldn’t have worked out another way and I know that. But it’s just so bittersweet.

The other thing is the age difference. It’s not an issue at all, but what I find hard to understand is the fact they’ll stay together. Bailey has no experience with anyone else and she’s going to university in the city. She’ll meet new people, she’ll change, Beau said that himself. And while they may be able to work through those changes and develop together, in their relationship, as a couple, they may end up two completely different people. Obviously, Willa moved away from the city to be with Cade, and there’s an age difference there. But she just seems like the knew what she wanted, and more importantly, what she didn’t. I think they will stay together but I can see them not. And I hate saying that 😭
