From the moment I found out that John Darnielle was going to release a book I knew I would love it. I was right, I did.
I've always been fascinated by his lyrics and this book had the same effect on me. I couldn't put it down.
It's written so beautifully, it's the best I've read this year.

Wonderfully dreamy and introspective. I enjoy books that center a lot around a character’s internal monologue, and I found myself relating to Sean a lot. This is the second Darnielle book I’ve read and I think his writing style is suited to me quite well.
The ending was a bit abrupt which is the only thing that kept me from giving it five stars.

4.5 stars.
This is the kind of book you read and wish would keep going. Only for this one, it actually is pretty short at 200 pages. I felt like it easily could have had another 100 pages since the story was so interesting. Because of that, I can't really give it a full 5 stars, but I did really love the writing and story, so 4.5 it is.

I have a feeling this is actually a five star book that I sort of ruined with interrupted reading and a short attention span.

Dreamlike, sharp but misty. Not much happens exactly, but at the same time you feel like there is a mystery to uncover, like playing an adventure game or reading a Christie novel. Beautifully crafted.

The audiobook was read by Darnielle himself, and it was excellent. Definitely recommend.

Loved the emotional and raw writing style, but the actual story was hard for me to connect with. The ending was pretty abrupt as well, which I didn't feel like I completely "got" the reasoning for. I think the level of appreciation of this book depends on personal experiences, which I'm grateful to not be able to understand.
