Epic, sprawling, and occasionally frustrating doorstop.

Gods clashed, armies clashed, deus-ex-machina clashed, allegiances shifted, and I stayed up way too late, reading some truly heart-wrenching and nail-biting scenes. But then, the narrative would meander, bogged down by unnecessary plotlines and endless small cameos that made me put the book down for weeks on end.

I appreciate the ambition, but a tighter focus would've made those powerful moments even better. Book five remains my favorite, and this one's worth reading for the highlights. Just be prepared for some slogging.

A lot of people are clearly being moved into place; I think we're entering the end of the middle. Felt like a lot was going on even though not a lot really happened! Erikson is suitably philosophical at times, but balances that well with comic relief. These books are at least getting easier on my poor brain.
