I probably don’t have to tell you that this book is very, VERY hyped. This book was chosen by my book club, so it gave me the nudge I needed to finally listen to it on audio.
I’m so sorry to report that to me, this book did not live up to the hype. I did not HATE it, but I did not like it very much.
First of all, our hilarious, bad b main character goes from a strong independent woman to clingy, whiny, and a little self deprecating because she fell in love with a man. I just didn’t love the direction of the character.
Second of all, the character development was just not there for me. There was so much context that could have been given to the readers. All we got was a tiny nugget of information about Sloane’s past and that’s really it. We know next to nothing about Rowan and his past. There’s very little context given about Sloane’s victims. Their backgrounds and why she was going after them would have added interest to the plot. And since the character development was so surfacey, the relationship felt like it had no depth either. I just wasn’t buying it. The smut was okay. There was a lot less of it than I expected.
One thing about me is that I hate a slow burn. Hate it. And this romance is a slowwwwwww burn. I’m not judging readers that enjoy a slow burn but I do not.
Also I will not spoil, but the end was a big eye roll moment for me.
Overall, I didn’t love this. I might listen to the sequel when it’s available on Libby, since Lark is my favorite character. But we shall see!

WHAT. A. FUCKING. RIDE. this book is so dark, and so twisty, and yet I could NOT put this down. Read it in a few hours. Loved it. A little concerned about how much I loved it given its content - but WOW WOW WOW.
