My husband has been on me to read these books for years and I don't know why I didn't cave sooner. I absolutely loved this- the thieves elaborate planning and plotting of the revolution, the magic systems, the transformative story arc of Ven, the characters and their dynamics within the group, the fact that they all had things to learn and room to grow and it just developed so well- plus the writing style was great too. I can hardly wait to dive back into this world with the next book.

Really enjoyed this. It's the best first book in a fantasy series I've read, as it gets the plot moving (driven by characters) fairly straightaway and acts as its own self-contain story (sure, there are a few threads to yes-and to in the future). Gripping adventure as characters look to see if they can make a difference. I might actually read book 2 less than a year from now.

Super interesting concept. Characters are a little one-dimensional, but overall good story. Got a little annoyed at how many people had one syllable names, but that’s just me. Would have loved if there were more women with dialogue

The book starts off really strong and the world is super interesting. However
towards the end it feel off, the rebellion and the last chapter felt kinda weird and open in an unsatisfactory way, idk if enough to continue reading

Typical setting of a high fantasy novel (nobility, peasantry, evil lord, etc). Kind of follows the formula of other tried and tested fantasy books, but has plenty of twists + character's growth was handled really well.

It was a bit slow going, but the last hundred or so pages were a good pay off. Earlier parts were a tad more political than fantasy, but the characters were loveable enough for me to keep going.

Brandon Sanderson also writes compelling action sequences so those were a treat to read.
