I wanted to like this but it was just…boring? There were way too many detailed retelling of mundane daily events and relationships with people who didn’t matter. At times it felt like and indulgent daily journal. There were very few details into the reasons characters acted a certain way and a few characters that popped up multiple times that I wish would have been more key characters. There were very few exciting points in the book and just a lot of monotony in between.

"Every marriage is a gamble, even if you've known the person your entire life."

I really enjoyed this debut! It's an interesting setup, and the synopsis caught my attention when I read it. The extended families were pretty stressful to read about at times. I loved seeing Afi grow throughout the story, and I would check out another book by Peace Adzo Medie.

CW - death of a parent, mention of abuse in school

I don’t usually write reviews but this book was moving. The way that she is willing to fight the status quo (no spoiler here) is really fascinating. I don’t think I have read a book with such a strong character. She went from being a little annoying to me being in awe of her. Being that brave really takes strength and determination. Even the spouse ebbed and flowed in ways that I didn’t guess he would.

Seemed very rushed towards the end and not very cohesive at the beginning

This was a quick and easy read. Being from a culture where women are expected to shut up and serve their husbands, I really liked Afi’s journey. An enjoyable read to jump back into reading if you’ve been taking a break or struggling
