Frank Blackthorne is a thief, except his most recent heist goes somewhat awry when the Temple of Natlac is not as empty as he was told... After rescuing the then-virgin, Frank takes a job to rescue a Princess from a dragon so that perhaps he can turn his luck around. But that doesn't go so well either after a spell has some unintended consequences of putting Frank's soul into the princess' body. Hijinks ensue as the thief-turned-princess and princess-turned-dragon search for the Evil Wizard so their souls can be returned to the correct bodies.

The book was as humorous as the cover said it was going to be. I loved the interactions between Frank and Lucille as well as Frank's problems finding himself in the body of a nubile princess. The "bad guys" were delightfully twisted and caused no end of issues for poor Frank. I look forward to a second book.

Hilarious. By no means is it supposed to be taken seriously and it never pretends to be; Dragon Princess has lovable characters, a wild D&D-esque plot and hilarious dialogue. But I was cackling the entire time and loved every moment.

Some might feel the plot is a bit iffy, and I get that, but the author handles it was grace. When the main character Frank, is swapped into the princess’ Lucille’s body, he is confused and respectful. Not obsessive or creepy about the whole thing, mostly just annoyed and motivated to set it right.

Despite it not taking itself seriously, and not taking on heavy content, Dragon Princess was a book I was invested in. I fell in love with the characters, they fit easily into archetypes at first, but become well rounded and individuals as the story goes along. And the side characters never cease to baffle, frustrate and amuse me.

(CW: Threat of assault)

That being said a good portion of the first half of the book is Frank being nervous about every man he encounters while in a female form. Some of it ends up being founded in reality, but it is not explicit and he is never actually hurt. If you’re very sensitive to this, I would proceed with caution. But if you’re like me, uncomfortable but not triggered by that sort of content, you’ll be okay.

It is not supposed to be taken so seriously, and it does a fantastic job. It was a comfy fantasy read, easy before bed and never too emotionally heavy.

If you need a funny, pick me up, comfy fantasy, I would whole heartedly recommend Dragon Princess.

I’ve already gotten the next one, Dragon Thief and can’t wait to start. 😊

This book is a quick fun fantasy read. I'm not the biggest fan of first person points of view but the author does keep the character's voice consistent. The character development is decent. I think the other two books of this trilogy show the development better.

This fantasy comedy was such a fun read. Frank Blackthorne gave a silly, cynical, first person narration which set the tone for the story start to finish.

Dragon Princess by S. Andrew Swan is such a fun read! A highly sarcastic, slightly unfortunate, body-swap tale told by the unwilling protagonist: renown thief, Frank Blackthorne.
.
Frank thinks highly of his skill and intellect, though he recognizes that he has fallen on hard times. A debt to the thieves guild left him desperate for any job. And when the "abandoned temple" he needed to hit ended up full of cult worshippers of the Dark Lord Natlac mid sacrifice, he made himself another powerful enemy.
.
Down on his luck in a crappy bar, with a crappy drink, the court Wizard of Lendowyn offers him a new job: rescue the Princess from a Dragon. But Frank knows Lendowyn is broke, & that this job reeks of "ITS A TRAP" -- unfortunately, he can't afford to make another enemy.
.
Miraculously, Frank manages to walk away from the wizard's evil deed unscathed, only....he walks away inside the Princesses body. And thus, we embark on a quest to right this situation which went so terribly wrong.
.
The story takes a familiar concept, in a familiar setting, & makes it brand new with a fast pace, modern humor, & the tone of perpetually sighing at requests from your boss. 'I'll do it, but only because I literally cannot say no.'

Short read which keeps you entertained. It's witty characters and body-swapping situations are a lot of fun and it makes you just want to continue turning pages till the end.

On the other side, the story is not especially complex and the world building is just so so but that's about it.

I love body-switch stories, so I give two stars based primarily on that. The narrative voice was fun, but that was not enough to lift this fairly predictable book above the level of mediocre for me.
