Period-consistent racism and sexism permeates this mystery, and even the protagonist is insufficiently likeable to compensate for his frequent "jokes" about his girlfriend's Jewishness and femaleness, and his snobby comments about his co-workers, even though they are a pathetic and unpleasant lot.
