I keep wanting to call this Vera Bradley.

I enjoyed how quick of a read this was and the brief navigation through Vera’s pivotal years. I think from a high-level perspective, it accomplishes partially what the title set out to do.

With a more critical lens, it was difficult for me to really commit to understanding the plot for the spy years. I was left feeling underwhelmed, but also hopeful that the sequel will be more action driven (especially since I went ahead and grabbed books two and three from the local bookstore with a gift card).

This book's protagonist is compelling and I enjoyed the vivid, immersive descriptions of 1966 Buenos Aires as well as the glimpses into her past. The plot unfolds slowly at first, then picks up in the second half of the book with some dramatic turns--but once everything wraps up, these events have little lasting consequence for Vera, which I found disappointing.

enjoyable read, but light on plot. I get that it's trying to match the vibe of noirs where the plot is less important than the vibes, but the vibes aren't strong enough to cover the lack of plot. I will still be reading the second book eventually but like......I'm not in a rush.

Very immersive, but the marketing made me expect more action. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it as the first queer woman spy novel I've ever tried. Might go looking for some f/f noir next.
