This is a graphic novel edition of THE LAST UNICORN. My generation grew up loving the animated version of this, and the original novel by Peter S. Beagle. All versions are amazing.

The graphic novel is just about everything you could want it to be. Gorgeous, with a touch of the otherwordly in its art. I had issues with a handful of spots where the adaptation was not clear about what was going on -- readers who have not known this story in another format could become confused at times because of the vagueness of some of the text. Aside from that, my only other quibble was with the interviews at the back of the book being crammed into tiny print to save on page count. Many of us readers do not have the young eyes we used to, and we would have appreciated being able to read that interview without straining our eyeballs.

All in all, a lovely edition, well worth spoiling yourself with or giving as a gift to the next generation, so that THE LAST UNICORN will live, generation after generation, in the hearts of humankind.

My full review is here on my personal website. I'll post a few excerpts here, though:

The very worst thing about this book is that a few spots in the last two chapters are a little difficult to follow if you don’t know the story (either from the book or the movie).

The very best thing about this book is the artwork. Oh, it’s just beautiful. I absolutely love this book! The movie adaption of the novel is easily my favorite movie and has been since I was a child. When I discovered the book, it quickly became a favorite as well. Then my sister found the graphic novel at Books-A-Million last week and I just about died. As soon as I had it in my hands, I couldn’t let it go. The guy working was laughing at me because I wouldn’t even let him bag it, he had to just hand me a bag because I refused to let it out of my hands. I was ecstatic, to say the least.

This book is beautifully illustrated and tells the story in such a lovely way. Highly recommend reading this edition of the book if you ever have the chance to do so. It is worth the read.

The art is so, so stunningly beautiful! I especially loved how the unicorn was portrayed in the first few chapters, all flawless and glowing. I didn't like Schmendrick's face that much but Molly and Prince Lir looked great.

I don't have much experience in comic books and graphic novels but I thought the storytelling was a bit vague at times. I know the plot pretty well from watching the movie a bunch of times and reading the novel but if someone who didn't know the story at all read this book they might feel a little left out.

There's an interview with the original author Peter S. Beagle at the end of the book. I bet it's interesting but I couldn't tell you because I refuse to read something that is printed in a 6 pt font.
After that you find some Last Unicorn-related art from different illustrators, I liked that.

If you love either the novel or the movie I recommend this graphic novel to you. It stays true to the original story but adds a fresh new look to it.

Maybe I expected too much. Maybe my love of unicorns and rainbows built up an expectation that was unrealistic.

But this sweet novel wasn't as lovely as I had hoped.

There was a constant vein of sadness that permeated throughout.

Maybe I was in a bad place when I read it. I'll give it another shot later on. But ultimately this book was lovely but not exceptional.
