This is the second book I've read from Asher. It surrounds a girl named Jamie who simply wants a friend and to live a normal life. Instead, her parents give her away to a horrid man named Hank who abuses her and makes her do the most disgusting things.

This story is filled with plenty of heartbreak and thrilling moments. Asher does get very descriptive, which adds to the story. I found myself rooting for Jamie to escape the horror and save her 'friend', Heather. However, the twist at the end left me breathless.

According to the end, there is room for a sequel... maybe. I sure hope there is a sequel because I would love to read it. This was quite a tough read, especially with the backstory. However, I found myself enjoying the book regardless!

My first time reading Asher Darks and I chose When I Die. It was a brutal and extreme story, which is everything that I love! But, I also thought it was written really well and I was invested from page one. The characters in this book get put through the wringer in the most gruesome ways. It was fun all around! I definitely recommend picking it up if you don't have any triggers, cause this one has a lot going on!

I read this as a palette cleanser between les dark books because my brain was itching for something macabre and messed up beyond reason.

This. Was. It.

I devoured it in one sitting and was absolutely riveted the whole time. The character development was fascinating and the gore was delivered in such a nonchalant way through Jamie's point of view that isn't seen in a lot of books.

This is not for the faint of heart, but for anyone looking for a quick splatterpunk read, check this out.

A truly messed up story. For a short read, the violence, both physical and psychological, was insane, but the story behind is so evil, twisted, and heartbreaking. The FMC is a disaster, the product of growing up knowing only death and violence. Having her point of view of the situation, was equally terrifying and heart-wrenching. To really conclude this grim story, the ending was the final blow to the gut.

So if you’re in a mood for something bleak, bloody and barbaric, that will mess with your head, read this one.

Definitely predictable on who the girls were based on the prologue.

Great fast read though.

Ooof

This one was a punch to the gut

4.5, rounded to five. Jamie had moments that didn't make sense to me based on her history, but the story itself was laid out and executed really well
