In this unique book, Virginia Jealous traces her fathers footsteps in his search for the poet Laurence Hope. I had never heard of Laurence Hope (Adele Florence Cory/ Violet Nicolson) before, knew nothing about her famous poems or tragic death. I loved learning all about her although sometimes felt that my ignorance hindered my reading in parts. Part historical document, part travel guide this book takes you on a deeply personal journey, I thoroughly enjoyed the peppering of Laurence Hopes beautiful poetry throughout. In fact the writing style in the entire book was a joy to read. I did however find some parts of the book dragged a little bit, particularly towards the end. I know that now when I walk into a second hand bookstore I will be checking the poetry section for LH and hope to one day stumble across one of her books for my own. This is fairly hardcore non-fiction with little to no narrative, so recommended for a seasoned non-fiction reader. To finish here is one of Laurence’s Hopes poems-
Men should be judged, not by their tint of skin,
The gods they serve, the Vintage they drink,
Nor by the way they fight, or love, or sin,
But by the quality of the thought they think.

I was gifted this book from the publisher to review.
