This book electrified me. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a neighbouring community to Johnson. Maybe it’s because I know MANY people in Saskatchewan, including relatives, who would have made that same choice had they been on the jury, and that fills me with shame, much like that expressed by Johnson in the book. Maybe it’s because his ideas around policing, incarceration, and community justice make so much sense that it hurts to realize how many decades have gone by with nothing but talk. No action.

“Indigenous peoples were extremely upset by the Stanley decision. It seemed that Canadian justice cared more about the property rights of settlers than about the lives of Indigenous youth. Gerald Stanley had used deadly force to protect his property and the law decided that was okay.

Meanwhile, Indigenous peoples were serving prison time at an ever increasing rate. The 2017-2018 annual report of the Federal Office of the Correction Investigator stated in the 10 year period between March 2009 and 2018 the Indigenous inmate population increased by 42.8%, compared with the less than 1% overall growth during the same period.”

This was outstanding!

One of the best Indigenous reads I have read recently.

Extremely important read - very strong book on Indigenous justice.

Would recommend to all. Very impactful book.
