More fun that it had any right to be. I'm even a little too young to get all of the pop culture and video game references, but it was still a blast to read - a satisfying page turner for sure.

Immersive story of the ultimate virtual reality game

I'll admit - I only heard of this when my husband made me watch a trailer for the film a few weeks ago. I'm not a huge sci-fi/computer game fan, but something about the concept struck home, and I determined to read the book before seeing the film (which looks pretty good!).

The creator of the world's most popular and best virtual reality environment, a game changer, has died and left as his legacy a series of clues and 'easter eggs' in his world, the solver of which will inherit his vast wealth. In their dystopian world, many people lose themselves in the OASIS and it is a worldwide hunt for the prize.

Wade Watts is a teenager in an OASIS virtual school, schooling himself in all things OASIS and a 'gunter' (an easter egg hunter) in every spare minute, forgetting the famine and poverty of the real world. Of course, big money corporations take advantage and use their clout to try and get ahead to win control of the OASIS for themselves.

I loved this. It's not perfect, but it does grab you and like the world it portrays, become a story you want to see through. Wade narrates, and he and his group of friends between them take us on a tour of a wonderfully exciting virtual world - one with planets from every major sci-fi you could name, it's a tempting prospect, even I want to spend some time there!

It's very well created, Cline spends a lot of time describing the OASIS, but it's just what I as reader wanted, the world is almost a character in itself, and fascinating to explore.

As a child born in 1980 as well, the story focusing on that decade had a good few nostalgic treats in store (even if the games were completely out of my sphere).

A few things could have made the ending a bigger climax - a proper confrontation with the 'villain' actually speaking, for one, and it also felt a little rushed and over too quickly.

Reading along knowing it's soon to be a film, I could see every scene on a screen, it felt very cinematic, and just perfect for adapting.

Can't wait to see Wade's world on a large screen, the technology may not be up there with the OASIS but it's certainly good enough now to do justice to its world(s).

Great sci-fi/fantasy dystopia. Lots of action, a set of sympathetic characters and an immersive world. One for teens or adult readers.

I enjoyed reading this book. It has a good development of story and good references to the pop culture.

I freaking love this book and can't wait to read it again.

The story is engaging and entertaining and I cared about Wade and his friends. The great pop culture from the 80s just made it even better.

Third Read: October 2023
This book is such a nerd fantasy, no wonder the teenage me ate this shit up all those years ago. While I've definitely outgrown a lot of it by now, this was, and still is incredibly fun.

Second Read: 26/10/2020
As I lay in my bed last night, unable to sleep, I found myself randomly scrolling through the countless books I’ve been storing on my Kindle for the last few years. As I neared the very end of my collection, a certain cover popped up, and a wave of nostalgia swept over me, compelling me to pick this up again. I figured I'd take my time, devouring the book slowly and steadily, given that it is a re-read, after all.

Oh well.

Next thing I know, I’ve spent every moment I could spare throughout the day, and most of the evening ploughing through the pages. And let me tell you, this book is WAY TOO SHORT! The reading experience was a lot of the same, and yet SO different? For one, I've outgrown the characters now. But that's the charming thing about re-reads, really, how your perspective and outlook completely changes in the time between the reads, in turn providing a completely unique reading experience. This was something I felt very strongly, especially for this very book. The first time can never ever be matched, yes, but over the years that have passed, I have come to know of and have experienced most of the stuff that the characters mention and deal with, stuff that I had absolutely NO idea about when I first read the book (I had enjoyed it nonetheless), which only made me appreciate it more. And the funny thing is that I never actively looked to read all that, or watch, or play, or listen, or do. It just happened.

As for the book? Breathtakingly FUN! The coolest! A nerd utopia! I found myself giggling and screaming as I read through certain passages, my heart hopping a little whenever a familiar reference popped up. I was skeptical but nah. Still as delightful as ever, a favorite standalone. Hands down. Cautiously optimistic for Ready Player Two, hoping it’s not a disappointment, like the film adaptation was.

First read: 30/10/2016.
I could relate to Wade like I have never been able to relate to a character before.
Also, Monty Python love. So much love!
This is THE best Sci-Fi dystopian book I have read.
We need OASIS. This shitty world would just be so much better.
