This book has been on my radar since its release because I had heard it was an interesting and atmospheric gothic horror.
"Mexican Gothic" follows a young woman named Noemí Taboada. Noemí received a letter from her recently engaged cousin that she needs Noemí to save her from this home of doom. When Noemí arrives at the wealthy estate of her cousin's fiancé, she discovers that her cousin is much worse off than she feared. The home feels sinister, and the family seems to be hiding something that the whole town is fearful of, but can Noemí save her cousin before it is too late?
The one thing this story did really well is that it was an all-consuming type of atmospheric. They setting was creepy, but fascinating and vivid. I loved really all of the details about the home and the town itself.
Once we get passed the atmosphere, I felt like the story was a little dry. I was not terribly invested in the characters and I was not too interested in the story.
This story was not bad, but it also did not blow me out of the water. I will definitely still pick up more from Silvia Moreno-Garcia in the future.

I haven’t read a Gothic novel in ages and this one satisfies. A Mexican mash-up of Jane Eyre and Rebecca, it features a young socialite way over her head when she ventures to the mountains to see why her warm and happy cousin is so miserable and confused early in her marriage.

This features the tropes of the big scary house, the handsome but sinister host, and appearances of half-seen ghosts. But the true ghosts of the story are the natives who died in the silver mines when the English moved in after the revolution that ousted the Spanish.

I found the fungi lessons intriguing, especially the making of spore prints, though other might not be as interested in mushrooms and the fungi lifestyle.

Featuring a strong, feisty heroine determined to save her sickly cousin, this is an enjoyable if creepy mystery that keeps you thinking.
