A tense, high-stakes action story about power, obsession, and mistrust in a world where people can overpower others and possess their bodies, this book was exciting to read, but I was left a bit unsatisfied. The worldbuilding is interesting and this definitely felt like a Book One in that a lot of important aspects of the magic (
how did Anton jump into August’s body in the end with nobody noticing? Why can’t the Weisannas be jumped into? What was going on with the empty vessel jumping? How did Otta wake up and kill everyone else?
) was left unexplained. I was happy with the cliffhanger ending, but I didn’t feel like much had been resolved by the end of this one and there were too many big questions I had at the end.

That being said, the world is exciting and if the future books answer the questions I have remaining, that will be interesting to me. I also wish we got more character development, but I assume there will be more of that in future books.

Read if you like urban fantasy and dark romance.

i really dug this!! almost screamed into a pillow at the ending, because what do you MEAN
anton somehow jumped into august's body?? how did that happen??

my one teeny-tiny issue is just the pages and pages of infodumping about the world. i don't necessarily think it's bad (in fact, i quite like a little infodump from time to time), but i definitely managed to breeze through reading a little faster when the bulk of it had passed. beyond that, i think it was super fun, and i'm really stoked to read book 2 :]

This probably isn’t my favorite Chloe Gong book, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The magic system and the worldbuilding were especially confusing in the beginning. Although I’m still confused lol. I’m hoping the next few books will explain the “jumping” more. Also, I love the complicated relationships between all the characters. But I feel like the two mc’s relationship was developed really fast. I would have loved to see more of a slowburn. I think most of that was setting up for the cliffhanger ending and the next book but still.

This was just boring. Too many characters without properly establishing them, and when they’re established they’re all the shit of everything and the best fighter, the best jumper, whatever. It feels like nothing really happened so far and I’m really not in any way looking forward to read it again, so I dnfd this.

Nothing about this was fun. Everything was basically explained already? I was missing maybe a sense of mystery (not in like a mystery-genre kind of way but more like a „every book needs to have some things that make you go huh, that’s interesting, I want to find out more. How did that happen? Why did that happen?“ etc. and it just didn’t.

I stopped reading this 2 days ago and basically forgot everything and I genuinely do not care about the characters in the slightest.

The world building was interesting enough with the split city and everything, but everything being super filthy and gross really didn’t improve my enjoyment of this.

Wouldn’t even recommend to my worst enemy.

I really enjoyed this Antony and Cleopatra inspired story. I saw the hints, but at the same time it was it's own story. It also had a Hunger Games type feel to it, but instead of forcing kids to kill each other without an option, it's anyone whose willing to participate.
