I loved loved loved the intro! expected a book about navigating life and perceptions and acceptance of what is. I couldn’t identify with the author- we are different people and that’s okay!

A beautifully written wet fever dream that truly gets at the question of how should a person be that I haven't yet, but feel is not meant to be, fully processed. I loved the at times unfiltered quality of Heti's writing, which left my mouth agape throughout the read and my mind asking if she really just wrote that. I hope to return to this read at some point later in life.

Most three star reviews signify a "meh" reaction to a work, but I was passionately ambivalent about this one. There were whole paragraphs and chapters that I found myself highlighting nearly in their entirety, and other paras and chapters I found it almost impossible to slog through (so many dream sequences). There's a slim five star novella inside How Should A Person Be.

An exuberant mess of a novel. So alive. I loved it.
