read this book so quick that I didn't even have time to update my bio on here of what I was reading.... HOLY CRAP! This book was SO GOOD that I literally had no idea "who dun it" till nearly the end. I could not stop turning the pages of this book. It would have been a knock out 5/5 but one thing happened and I'm still not sure why.. maybe that's my fault but it honestly doesn't really change the outcome of the story.

We Lie Here follows Yara Gibson, a TV writer on a trip back home for her parents 20th anniversary party; not her idea of a great vacation. Everything is going well until she gets a text: "I have information that will change your life" from a woman claiming to be her mothers childhood friend, Felicia Campbell. BUT before Yara is too late; Felicia is found the next day floating in Lake Palmdale. Felicia left Yara a key for a lakeside cabin that would contain files and clues to a lifelong unsolved mystery about Yara's family. What Yara finds out will definitely change her life - or end it.

I've read one of Rachel Howzell Hall's books before and quite enjoyed it, so I was happy to dive into her newest thriller. Again, I was immediately hooked, even though the premise of a woman returning to her more or less rural hometown only to be met with a mystery is not a new one. I like it though so I was all game. Hall writes in a very approachable, direct way, at times I almost thought it rather simplistic. It's an easy to read book that I finished in a single sitting.
While I was hooked at first, that interest slowly but surely diminished over the course of the story. The mystery is rather predictable, there are too many repetitive dialogues in which a character explains something to another character that we, as a reader, already know or just found out, which just seemed redundant and unecessary. The characters themselves have potential but are rather shallow in the end, and because it's pretty clear where the story is heading and who the culprits are certain big twists about them don't really work so well. There's generally too much side noise, too, little stories that don't really add anything to the plot nor the characters. There is one central relationship between out protagonist Yara and her mother that I found really interesting, but the complexity of it doesn't reach the finish line.

All in all an okay-ish book with a writing style that just doesn't fit me as a reader very well and a mystery that is too predictable and pretty cliché as well.

Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the arc!

I love the honesty in this book. It's so blunt it was actually making me laugh out loud. Yara and Dominique have a relationship like I have with my siblings. This was a unique storyline and it pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. The ending blew my mind! I never seen it coming! Definitely recommend this read!

I listened to the audiobook and it was super hard to follow. All I really took away from this is Yara has asthma and her mom is a bitch.

This storyline had so much potential, I just wish it was more coherent.

I’ve been recommended this book so many times I had high expectations. I love psychological thrillers with a jaw dropping twist and this one was a very slow burn. Twist wasn’t that predictable, but this isn’t a book I would recommend to my friends. Additionally, I found some of the writing a bit redundant; at one point a character called themselves “the goat” and another followed up with “what are you the greatest of all time at?” Little things like that I didn’t care for. With that being said, you do have to have decent knowledge of AAVE to fully understand some of the books dialogue. If you do get this book I would recommend reading it instead of listening to the audiobook. There are 2 different POVs but they can get confusing if you aren’t following along.

Unfortunately, the narrator made this book very hard for me to follow. While the over-all story was good once I got there- I had to re-listen to areas where the character speaking changed for short chapters.
