Unfortunately, the narrator made this book very hard for me to follow. While the over-all story was good once I got there- I had to re-listen to areas where the character speaking changed for short chapters.

The book had a strong start and premise but the further it went, the more it loses itself.  By 30% I was able to guess the main plot twist, which isn’t a terrible thing but the author struggled to keep my attention in the middle.  It felt extremely repetitive and counterproductive.  Mother gaslights daughter, daughter gets mad, daughter feels guilty, daughter tries to appease mother, mother gaslights daughter again. Wash and repeat.  If it didn’t happen so many times it would have been somewhat bearable. The ending got better, but like girl this was obvious what’s going on?  The narration was also a little wonky at times. Especially when going from one topic to the next in a way to world build while trying to drive the plot forward.

There were moments while reading this book where I wasn't really sure what I was going to think. I flip-flopped a lot between not a fan of the writing style being the reason and the length of the book (feels long to be a thriller).

But!

In the end, I really enjoyed it. Despite the length, there weren't really any "filler episode" type moments where we just needed to pad things out. Every moment had something to do with the overall plot and took us to the destination. I didn't really like the rapid movements in conversation topics that happened a lot - many of them being ones where it was "it must be this person because of X and here's why" - conjecture type stuff. But it was jarring to jump from one topic to the next. Very normal in everyday life but hard to follow in reading. For me at least.

Ultimately, I liked where it all ended up. The doubt sprinkled through the book on behalf of Yara was nice to see. I don't know if "kept me guessing" is totally right since I wasn't all the surprised at the reveal but I still enjoyed the ride getting to the destination.
