A funny little story about how Wombat tries out for (and fails at) each role in the Nativity play. The illustrations gave me the giggles, and the story was cute.

This very cute little Christmas book arrived at the bookshop too late to go out on the shelves, but I'm quite sure they'll sell quickly this year (well, in November/December obviously). It's about a group of children - in the guise of Australian animals - who are trying out for parts in the Nativity play. Poor wombat! There's always another who fits each part better.

The storyline is sweet - the animals are always encouraging, and find a delightful ending - and the illustrations are lots of fun. I expect I'll have to buy a copy myself.

How can you not love a wombat who is finally old enough to be in the Christmas play and doesn't seem right for any of the parts? I just thought this book is a gem!

There were so many great elements in this book. Wombat's drive and perseverance, his friends encouraging words and actions, and the delightful conclusion. I adored it and appreciated the positive message it communicated.

Wombat really wants to be in the Christmas pageant; he just needs to figure out where he fits in. Great story for multiple animal voices.

This is a cute story of a young animal who wants to be part of the Nativity. He wants so badly to be have a part, but is too big, too small, too something for most of the parts in the play. In the end, he finds the perfect role.

This story is very simple. It doesn't have much substance, but it is a cute simple story.

I love this one for the Down Under feel you get from the story. The animals are putting on the Nativity play. Emu is in charge, as usual. Wombat is finally old enough to be in the play, but will they be able to find him a part? Every time I shared this one at story time or with friends, it found a lot of new fans. Really, really good.

I read this to my 3rd graders. Then we watched video clips I had found of all the Australian animals named in the story.

Wombat really wanted to be in the Christmas pageant, but what part could he play? Ages 4-8.
