Note to self a good cover does not mean a good book. I'll never learn this lesson.

The cover is gorgeous and the descriptions of early London were appropriately foul.

Absolutely loved this one! Such a good mystery with so many twists and turns - and so gruesome too. Loved the POV narrative and reflection throughout. I'm definitely excited to continue the series!

Meet Jem – a woman dressing as a man so as to continue her work as an apothecary in a crumbling London hospital in the 1840s. The story is fast paced and completely sucks the reader in – I could almost smell the blood, the pus, the rotting city with its overflowing cemeteries and feel the oppressive nature of London at that time. As if that wasn’t enough, there is also murder, mystery and mayhem to keep the reader’s interest. I read this in two sittings and can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Recommended by a friend, this turned out to be a GEM, hahaha. I enjoyed the writing style as much as the story, which meant I took it slowly even though I couldn't wait to find how it would turn out. Enjoy!

While the narrator/heroin was mostly fleshed out, her sidekick remained paper-thin. We were told several times that the heroin really liked and trusted him, but never were we shown why. On top of the very graphic descriptions of 1840s medicine/surgery, it's enough to make sure I won't read another book in this series.
