oh man oh wow talk about a winner. have to consider this instant 5 star stuff. more or less perfect fiction; captures coming of age with such a uniquely vignetted approach that feels so, so, right for the material. both incredibly specific and profoundly universal at the same time. just a hugely empathetic and special work. I'm sad that it's as short as it is but it makes plenty of sense as to why. it also makes for a great excuse to hunt for another Cisneros ASAP. bowled over and astonished with her ability to emulate a child's voice, mentality, and perspective, half as well as she does and with such clarity too. tender and delicate and yet knows the exact moment, the exact ways, to drop a sledgehammer on you. encouraging every person I've ever met to read this.

Con cada cuenta, Cisneros añade al menos una persona adicional al reparto, desarrollando la atmósfera un poco más hasta, al final, Mango Street está respirando y suspirando con los deseos y sueños de una comunidad completa.

My first read for my course on Teaching Literature, and this is a classic for a reason. I wish I had read this with my Freedom School middle schoolers. The short stories pack so much emotion, wit, and character. I starred my favorite ones to go back and use for teaching.
