An amusing and heartbreaking tale of the lives of several Filipino maids in Singapore who accidentally end up embroiled in a murder.

The narrator is doing a tremendous job with voices and accents but that can’t save a boring book.

I’m almost a quarter through and nothing has happened. It’s been page after page of classism. It hurts to read how badly domestic workers are treated in this book (I hope this is not a true reflection of society in Singapore).

The entire book so far as been rich Singaporean women talking badly about their maids and then seeing how poorly the maids are treated by their employers and society (eg security guards).

Well-written and enjoyable but I personally struggle with multi-POV  because it’s hard to get as invested in the characters, especially when one character’s storyline isn’t as compelling.

I’d say 25% whodunnit, 75% fiction. I enjoyed this read. It felt a little long to me, but overall, the perspective of housekeepers/maids in Shanghai felt fresh and a nice break from the amount of books I’ve read that are based in the US/UK.
