I knew from reading some of Billie Letts other books that this was going to be an emotional roller coaster, and it was. This story focuses on 15 year old Lutie and her 11 year old brother Fate who take off in search of their father after their guardian dies in Wal-Mart. (What is it with Letts and Wal-Mart?!). I found myself just really rooting for them through the entire novel... and in the end it's about them figuring out was family really means.

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I picked it because I figured it would be lighthearted, chick-lit sort of listening. I was definitely wrong. It was still a pretty good book - well-done and such, just much heavier than I was expecting. Unfortunately, I have never met a more disagreeable main character than in this book. Lutie was just awful. She had absolutely no redeeming qualities. And the names were pretty annoying as well. But still, an interesting read.

I had great hopes for this book after reading "Where the Heart Is".....sadly I was disappointed. The story had great potential, but for me it was just a little too raw, a little too in your face. While I understand that some of it may have been necessary to make a point, I think it went a little too far into the details of the darker side of life than it needed to.
I was pleased with the ending and maybe would have liked the book better overall if more time had been spent on the good side of things.....my glass remains half full ;-)

I did not want to like this book.
It looked too much like those books where you never worry about the hero cos you know they will all be happier at the end than they are at the beginning. Those too good to be true books. And while the ending was a little bit picture perfect, I was impressed with how real the darkness was that the author let our heroine's find.
A good lazy Saturday morning breezy read.

A little depressing, this book. There was none of the optimism or cheeriness in spite of troubles that I remember from her other books. I loved the little brother, Fate, but didn't like Lutie. But even Lutie doesn't like Lutie, so that's not surprising. Although the first half of the book is one unpleasant event after another, I was glad I kept reading. The ending wasn't all happy, but it was enough that I gave the book a pat on the cover when I was done and thought, "Well, okay. That was good."
