4.5 Stars!!

Wow. Talk about an intense emotional roller coaster ride!!

Despite this being the 4th interval book between the first and the second main novels, this was for me the best of the bunch - the most fully realized story regarding the nebulous relationship that has slowly been forming between assassin Ethan and government spy Jack.

Action suspense, life threatening situations, all entwined with several awful punches in your gut feels. Quite the painful point in their story but one that plays out beautifully to finally start anew!

Devil in the Details (Death and the Devil 1.8) is the 3rd novella in the Death and the Devil series and this series just keeps getting better as Jack and Ethan delve deeper into their relationship. Certainly things between them are still on rocky ground. They’re both emotionally damaged and neither have much experience with relationships (or in Ethan’s case…any experience). The last time they saw each other Jack had a killer case of the flu and hurt Ethan’s feelings with his incoherent babbling, so he wasn’t sure if he would even ever see him again.

1.8 consists of 2 sections; both of which are a mix of action and intrigue, sexy times and relationship building. The first section is told from Ethan’s point of view – which is cool because he’s the least accessible of the two as far as figuring out what’s going on in his head. Jack is thrilled to come home and find Ethan waiting for him – until he realizes that this little visit may have been more professional than personal. Once again it seems Ethan is meddling in Jack’s job, despite his express request that he refrain from doing so.

The second section takes place a little over a month later and is told from Jack’s point of view. Ethan is again MIA, unsure of Jack’s feelings and his place (if any) in Jack’s life. In typical Ethan fashion he concocts another of his little “tests” to get the information he wants (instead of, you know; just having a straight forward conversation and asking). Jack has been busy stewing about Ethan’s blow off, right when Jack made himself vulnerable and specifically asked for Ethan, telling him he needed him. Naturally he’s a little pissy when he gets the out of the blue letter with travel plans. Ethan it seems has decided he needs to see if he is merely a convenience or if Jack will actually travel to *him*. It is in this section that the boys are able to make some (clumsy, awkward, horribly inept) forward movement in their relationship. There’s still no kiss on the mouth, but it is definitely coming.

I enjoyed the first one but I'm not a huge novella fan and these are required reading for book 2. I still got them and read them, but I'm not so sure I would have bought all of them, if I hadn't purchased book 2 and realized I couldn't read that without reading these.

Wow!! Wow wow wow, I love this series SO MUCH.

This books aren't full books but they were SO necessary for Jack and Ethan's story - and also this one felt like a full length novel. The location amount in kindle was over 3000, which has to be close to 200 pages or well over 200 pages. That's a full length novel to me, compared to the other short stories.

In this last short story before the next full length novel, we FINALLY get one of the short stories in Ethan's POV, and getting insight into his mind and his feelings for Jack was awesome and amazing and so fun. I hope we get some POV from him in the second book. That would be awesome.

And no, Jack and Ethan STILL HAVE NOT BLOODY KISSED! ARGH! I'm going to scream with how long it is taking. But they are so fucking close to it and it better be fucking explosive and amazing and passionate when it happens because we all have been technically waiting for 5 damn books now.

I also hope we get to learn so much more about Ethan's past. My biggest thing is why he has to wear socks basically at all times. Like what happened with his feet that he wants them covered all the time? I'm curious about the giving a blowjob thing to, if Ethan really doesn't like to give it or if it's more. And if Paul is really his real name, and so on and so forth. So much we still don't know!

And okay, despite the no kiss (yet!) it came soooo fucking close to happening several times and they do get to a much more solid place, relationship wise, in this one. That made my heart sing and I felt giddy. Also these two finally talking about real shit was awesome.

There was one thing that made me so freaking sad
SpoilerHarry dying. Like wtf?! We only got to know him in these novella's, but I really liked him and he was a great friend to Jack. It was so unfair! :(

GAH! I can't wait for the next book. And I am so happy for these novella's that got Jack and Ethan's barely there relationship to a much more solid, secure place, and
Spoilerpretty much a relationship. It's still in the early stages, but there is the commitment there to try :D
.

Two massive thumbs up from me. Loved this!!! <3

This was an absolute roller coaster of emotions. I don’t even know how to deal with all this.

Full review to come.

This was an automatic 5 stars for me the second I began reading. Why you say? Well because the first part of this novella is Ethan's POV. That's right folks, we get to spend a little time inside our favorite assassins head. I've been dying to hear his thoughts since I first started the series and realized it wasn't dual POV. And you know what else, it wasn't what I expected. It was better.

Ethan is complex as a character on his own, but reading how he actually interpreted previous scenes was interesting to say the least. He is up there as one of my favorites. I just want to snuggle him sometimes.

The last novella dealt with the feels starting to emerge. This one had them actually opening their mouths and using words. Communication people! It's important.

I do think reading this novella will be important for the next actual book in the series. A lot of stuff happened in this little diddy. Things that are sure to be explored deeper in the book to come. I for one, cannot wait for more Ethan and Jack.

I continue to enjoy this series and how it is developing. But sometimes I worry that in the quest to create tension the author the story comes precariously close to falling off the rails. I worry about the next book(s) and if she will be able to maintain consistency without overdoing the tension and still offering an engaging read. Things are still on track however, and I did enjoy this short and looking forward to the next full length novel. This is one of my favorite series of the year ...

“So I’m just going to come home from work one day and find you in my apartment? Maybe wearing a ribbon?”

This is one action packed spy novella, however, that last part "Death Takes a Holiday" was just the sweetest moments of these two together figuring out where they stand and taking steps forward in their relationship and I am so ready for it!

Book 2 - I've heard rumors and I don't know if I'm ready for it after all that loveliness.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but these novellas are so damn good, I’m actually glad they exist instead of another full length book.
