I can’t tell you the last time I finished a book in one day but that’s what I did with this one. Start to finish sitting in the campsite I could not put this book down. Despite my finishing it in one day I did have issues with this book. I would’ve liked more explanation by the end about George and I also found myself enjoying the flashback scenes a bit more than the present time. Not my favorite King/Bachman book but glad I checked it off the list and read it so quickly. Blaze is a character that will stick with me for a while.

This story was too sad.

This is my first Stephan King/Richard Bachman book - and I wasn't disappointed.

His characterization was something to admire. No matter how big or small their role in the book was, you got a feel for them within a few short sentences. Main character Blaze was a marvel. No matter what he did, I was rooting for him. King somehow built him into someone to sympathize with, someone very likable. Whether you agreed with his decisions or not, you were still with the big oaf in the long run.

The back stories, his past, made the book for me. Reading about what brought him to do what he did made all the more sweet in the end, even better than the central plot.

Overall, very different than what I hear about his later work but still worth the read, definitely.

This was my first experience with a book-on-tape when I was driving from New Orleans to Indianapolis. I enjoyed the story well enough, but it was not the kind of King story I was hoping for.

It's a noir crime story, and although Blaze is an incredibly well-drawn character, I had a hard time connecting with him. It could have been the medium or possibly because it wasn't King's strongest story. Worth a read - or listen - if you are a King fan, but others can pass.
